Actors Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, and Dakota Johnson are reportedly in talks to star in the next film from Celine Song. Song made her directorial feature debut with the 2023 film Past Lives. Past Lives did incredibly well among critics and on the festival circuit, and went on to be nominated for two Oscars: Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
According to Deadline, the Song film is eyeing Pascal, Evans, and Johnson to star in the film, titled The Materialists. None of the three stars have been fully confirmed to be in the film, but are reported to be “in talks” and “circling.” The nature of their three characters is yet undisclosed.
What To Expect from The Materialists
There has been very little revealed by way of plot details for The Materialists. According to Deadline, the film will recount the story of “a professional matchmaker who gets involved with a wealthy man but still harbors feelings for the broke actor-waiter she left behind.” If Evans, Pascal, and Johnson were cast, it seems likely that Johnson would take the role of the matchmaker and Evans and Pascal would assume the parts of the wealthy man and the actor-waiter.
The project is supposedly attached to A24, who also distributed Past Lives. The producers for The Materialists include Christine Vachon, Pam Koffler, and David Hinojosa. In addition to directing, Song will also write the script for the film, as she did with her debut feature. The Materialists team may start production as early as this spring.

While there is little confirmed for The Materialists, even the prospect of stars this big is great news for Song. Despite having largely unknown actors, Past Lives was a surprise hit in 2023. The Materialists will seem to take after Past Lives by focusing on three main characters and a sort of love triangle-esque plot. If Song can garner that much critical acclaim with lesser known leads, who knows what she is capable of with a higher budget and higher-profile team behind her.
