Pearl Trailer Reveals Super Gory X Movie Prequel & Origin Story

Take a step back in time with the Pearl trailer’s creepy first look at the X movie prequel. Written and directed by Ti West, the 2022 slasher film centered on a group of wannabe pornstars and director as they set up shop at a rural farm owned by an elderly couple in Texas. Shortly after arriving, the group come to realize not all is as it seems and their lives are at risk as they’re picked off one by one.

Pearl will be set roughly 60 years before the events of X and explore the titular character’s origin as a young woman tending to her ailing father on her family’s isolated farm and is eager to escape to a life of glamor away from her devout mother. Mia Goth, who also co-wrote the script with director Ti West, is returning to lead the cast of Pearl as the eponymous villain alongside David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland and Emma Jenkins-Purro. Production on Pearl was conducted in secret on the heels of X wrapping shooting and now audiences are getting their first proper look at the upcoming prequel movie.

Just months after the film was revealed to be in the works, A24 has released the official Pearl trailer. The video offers the creepy first look at the upcoming X movie prequel, namely Mia Goth’a titular character as she descends into murderous madness in a Technicolor-drenched horror-thriller. The official Pearl trailer is sure to be a promising first look at the X prequel movie, presenting a very different look to the film in comparison to the 2022 slasher horror hit with a technicolor palette. This very vibrant approach to the movie’s visual style creates a Wizard of Oz-like feel to Pearl’s origin story, nicely tying into its themes of Mia Goth’s titular character’s desires to escape her small town and live a brighter life elsewhere, much like Dorothy of the classic fantasy adventure. It will also be interesting to see for horror genre fans how this colorful style translates to the bloody thrills of Pearl’s descent into her murderous nature of the original X movie.

One of the biggest takeaways from the Pearl trailer is the tease of how Ti West continues to expand his indie horror franchise. West has teased that the prequel will be a totally different horror film than that of X and with the writer/director having also teased plans for a possible trilogy set after X and exploring a new sub-genre, the Pearl trailer indicates the celebrated indie filmmaker is bringing both a unique visual and storytelling language to each installment. Only time will tell if the new film can live up to its critically acclaimed predecessor when Pearl hits theaters on September 16.
