The future of Steven Knight’s crime drama Peaky Blinders is apparently brighter than previously thought, as the creator announces plans for two additional seasons past season 5, which will continue to follow the often bloody antics of the Shelby clan. The news is likely welcome for fans of the series after it was assumed that the upcoming fifth season would be its last. But after season 4 reportedly delivered the series’ highest ratings yet in the U.K., it seems that the saga of Tommy Shelby and his family is far from over.
Peaky Blinders has risen from cult status to become something of a mainstream hit as of late. Part of that may be due to the exposure the series has been given in the States, where it is made available via Netflix. New seasons appear on the streaming service very soon after the finale has aired in the U.K., making it easier for fans across the Atlantic to not only avoid spoilers but also take part in the conversation while it’s still relevant (provided they can binge it fast enough, of course). For now, it looks as though the show’s increased popularity means it will carry on with seasons 5, 6, and 7, and, as Knight notes, possibly a ballet, too.

As reported by Deadline, Knight delivered the news recently to the Birmingham Press Club, saying not only is he game to continue writing the series, but star Cillian Murphy is on board, and so is the supporting cast. Knight said, “We’ve talked to Cillian Murphy and he’s all for it, and the rest of the principal cast are in for it.”
The possibility of Peaky Blinders continuing on past season 5 isn’t exactly a new idea. Knight discussed how the show’s passionate fan base and its increased popularity had made him to rethink bringing the series to an end. Knight previously said, “The thought has long been to finish after Season 5, but the momentum and love for the thing seems to still be growing exponentially and this is making us pause before deciding finally.”
What lies ahead could be very exciting, as the end of season 4 hinted at an appearance by none other than Al Capone, after the American mafia went to war with the Shelby’s as an act of retribution carried out by Luca Changretta (Adrian Brody). The series hasn’t been shy about moving the story forward by years at a time, so it will be interesting to see how Knight plans to balance that continued progression, Tommy’s push toward legitimacy, his burgeoning political career, and the arrival of one of the most famous gangsters ever, as Peaky Blinders moves past season 5 and into seasons 6 and 7.
