Star Wars: The Bad Batch gave new context to Palpatine’s Order 66 Coruscant trap, and it made the plan even more brilliant than anyone thought. While Star Wars has introduced many terrifying villains over the years, none have had quite the same presence as Palpatine. The loyalty that he commands combined with his ability to manipulate events and extreme power in the dark side make him a formidable enemy. His Order 66 plan was meticulously thought out and expertly executed. Now, The Bad Batch has shown just how much went into his plan, and why so few Jedi survived Order 66.
In Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, clone troopers storm the Jedi Temple. The clones clearly have a large presence on Coruscant, which is odd considering that, except for the kidnapping of Palpatine earlier in the movie, Coruscant hadn’t seen much of the war. There wasn’t really a reason for so many clone troopers to be deployed on Coruscant, especially with the Jedi presence there. However, The Bad Batch revealed that this was an important part of Palpatine’s plan all along.
How To Watch Star Wars Movies In Order
Here is how to watch all Star Wars movies and TV shows chronologically and in order of release, and how each fits into the Star Wars timeline.
Palpatine Recalled Clone Trooper Support, Stranding The Jedi
The Bad Batch season 1 revealed that Palpatine recalled clone troopers to Coruscant ahead of Order 66. This explains why Kanan Jarrus/Caleb Dume’s Jedi Master, Depa Billaba, only got Clone Force 99 as reinforcements. This was a maniacally brilliant move. Removing reinforcements meant that even Jedi who survived the initial Order 66 were stranded in enemy space. After all, most of the personnel on Republic warships were clones, a struggle that was seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars when Ahsoka Tano survived Order 66.
The Jedi Were Summoned To Coruscant… Where The Clone Army Waited
Palpatine also had Anakin Skywalker send out the recall signal in the Jedi Temple. This caused the Jedi who survived the initial Order 66 to flock to Coruscant. Once they arrived, they were met with an overwhelming mass of clone troopers that had been assembled as the pincers of a trap. This was the final nail in the coffin for the Jedi Order, and it is where a large portion of the Jedi who survived the initial Order 66 died.
After the clones’ betrayal, the surviving Jedi were in chaos. People who had fought with them for 3 years were suddenly trying to kill them. Their fellow Jedi were dead, and they could often only escape using small ships and escape pods as the larger ships were taken over by the clones. Responding to the Jedi Temple’s recall signal immediately was the most natural thing for them to do. They probably assumed that it was either the Council calling them to explain what happened and decide on the next steps, or that the Temple was also under attack and needed to be defended.
This just goes to show how well-organized the Clone Wars were. Palpatine planned out every piece of the Clone Wars meticulously. There wasn’t a single thing that wasn’t under Palpatine’s control. For example, Palpatine only wanted the Clone Wars to last for 3 years, so he orchestrated events to ensure that would happen. This additional detail in The Bad Batch shows he put the same care into the end of the war with Order 66.
