Pain Hustlers: Story

The Pain Hustlers story is based on an article in the New York Times from Evan Hughes as well as his later book “The Hard Sell.” In his article, Hughes examined and exposed the practices of a pharmaceutical company called Insys. According to Hughes, Insys took advantage of the opioid crisis, finding financial success in getting doctors to prescribe the fentanyl-based drug Subsys to patients as a pain medication. Hughes revealed the company hired young, attractive, and unqualified salespeople to push the drugs to doctors while also offering substantial “speaking fees” in exchange. The result was high salaries for the salespeople while many of the patients became addicted and even died from using the drug.

The story of Pain Hustlers bares a lot of similarities to the true story behind the Emmy-winning Dopesick and Painkillers, the recent Netflix miniseries. Both shows explored similar tactics used by the Sackler family and their company Purdue Pharma. Pain Hustlers is said to share a similar tone to The Wolf of Wall Street and The Big Short, suggesting a lot of dark comedy in exploring the immoral and criminal conduct of these corporations.
