Pacific Rim 2: Total Film Cover & Images Spotlight John Boyega

John Boyega is front and center in Total Film‘s new images from Pacific Rim Uprising. The film is a sequel to the 2013 Guillermo del Toro directed movie about humanity building giant robots called jaegers, piloted by two individuals sharing a deep connection (drift compatibility) to take on an otherworldly kaiju threat. While del Toro is not directing the new film, he helped develop the screenplay, design the creatures, and selected Steven DeKnight to take over helming duties for him.

Pacific Rim Uprising takes place 10 years after the original film and the Battle of the Breach, aka. the heroic battle which cost Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) his life. Boyega plays Jake Pentecost, a once promising jaeger pilot who turned to criminal activity as the weight of his father’s legacy became too much. But like Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) before him, it’s safe to say that Jake will learn to embrace his destiny and lead the fight. Along the way he will get help from his old friend Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood), his adopted sister Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), and scrapy newcomer Amara Namani (Cailee Spaeny).

The cover of Total Film Magazine features Boyega and Eastwood in their jaeger pilot suits looking ready for battle. The magazine’s other images (shared online by Gamesradar) show Boyega deep inside the inner workings of his jaeger, as well as two jaegers facing off for battle. There is also an image of Boyega and Spaeny, who is making her Hollywood debut in the film. She plays computer hacker Amara, who builds her own jaeger to seek revenge after the death of her family in a kaiju attack.

Pacific Rim Uprising looks to be even bigger than the first film with not just new characters, but new locations, even bigger and more destructive kaiju, and upgraded jaegers. The film’s mix of new and old cast members (Charlie Day and Burn Gorman are also reprising their roles from the original movie) is a great way to continue growing the Pacific Rim franchise and building the world that del Toro so lovingly created.

The original Pacific Rim film wasn’t initially a box office success, but overtime has grown to become something of a cult favorite. It is the combination classic monster destruction, strong characters and storytelling, and the creation of a vibrant new world that has made the film so beloved by fans. Hopefully, the sequel can live up to the original and cancel the apocalypse once again.
