Pacific Rim 2 Director Has Kong/Godzilla Crossover Idea

Pacific Rim Uprising director Steven S. DeKnight has a King Kong and Godzilla crossover idea for the third movie. The original Pacific Rim was directed by Guillermo del Toro and sold itself on the blissfully simple premise of giant robots fighting giant monsters. The film’s insane fight scenes and colorful visuals received praise upon release, though many found the characters and a story a little flat.

DeKnight replaced del Toro as the director of Pacific Rim Uprising, a sequel taking place a decade after the events of the original film. John Boyega plays Jake Pentecost – son of Idris Elba’s Stacker from the original – who leads a new generation of Jaeger pilots against new emerging Kaiju monsters. The Pacific Rim movies are produced by Legendary, which is also in charge of the MonsterVerse shared universe that features Godzilla and Kong. Some fans feel a crossover between all three franchises is a given, though Legendary has denied one is being considered.

Now in a new interview with Slashfilm, DeKnight says he has a concept for a potential third Pacific Rim movie that would make such a crossover possible – but it’s up to Legendary if they want that to happen:

Just in my own head. I don’t want anyone to think that was an official Legendary thing. That was Steve DeKnight the fanboy talking about what he would love to see. I have an idea, a plan for the third part of this Pacific Rim trilogy that would open up the universe and allow that crossover if Legendary wants to. It’s totally up to them. As a fanboy, I would love to see it. But if they want to keep it separate, I’ll still be paying for my tickets to see Kong, Godzilla, and more Pacific Rim.

On paper at least, a crossover between the three series makes perfect sense. Godzilla and King Kong are both Kaijus who battle other giant monsters, so it doesn’t take a big leap of imagination to fit Jaegers into that concept. That said, the MonsterVerse and Pacific Rim franchise operate in separate continuities and their timelines are completely different, so some creative retooling would be required to make them fit together.

Maybe Legendary is waiting to see the response to Uprising before deciding on the future – meaning, if the sequel underperforms, a crossover with the MonsterVerse becomes either more or less likely. Kong and Godzilla both have busy schedules looking ahead. The latter will face off with Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and then he and Kong have a playdate in 2020’s Godzilla Vs Kong.
