SPOILERS ahead for Ghostbuster: Afterlife 2!

New Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 set photos reveal the return of a character from the original Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters: Afterlife released in 2021, serving as a legacy sequel to the original films. It followed the family of Dr. Egon Spangler, played by the late Harold Ramis in the first two films. It was also directed by Jason Reitman, the son of the original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, with Dan Aykroyd, Billy Murray, and Ernie Hudson all reprising their roles. The movie introduced new characters in McKenna Grace’s Phoebe, Finn Wolfhard’s Trevor, Carrie Coon’s Callie, and Paul Rudd’s Grooberson.

The filming of Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 kicked off in March, with director Gil Kenan and producer Jason Reitman, who also co-wrote the film together, sharing the news. Now, new set photos shared by Michigan Ghostbusters have revealed the return of William Atherton, who played the antagonistic Walter Peck in the original film.

This is Atherton’s first time reprising the role of Peck after a deal couldn’t be reached for his return in Ghostbusters II. The set photos also see Ernie Hudson and Paul Rudd hiding what may be the Ghostbusters flight suit under a black cloak.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 features a stellar cast, with Rudd, Wolfhard, Grace, and Coon all returning, along with Hudson and now Atherton. The movie also introduces some new cast members including Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjiani. Other newcomers include Emily Alyn Lind, Celeste O’Connor, and James Acaster. Whether Aykroyd or Murray will return is currently unknown, though Aykroyd has expressed interest.

The plot is unknown, but the story will follow the same characters, though in a distinct change of location. Ghostbusters: Afterlife took place in Oklahoma, with the family now having moved to New York, with the infamous Ghostbusters firehouse being their first filming location. This could also help hint at some story details, with the newly revealed Walter Peck possibly again serving as an antagonist now that the Ghostbusters are making a resurgence in New York.

Reitman has ceded directing duties to Kenan for the sequel, though Reitman is still heavily involved, with the duo working to carry on the success they created with Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The film is currently eyeing a December 20, 2023 release date, with the studio having fast-tracked the film following the success of the last film. Further details on Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 will be forthcoming as production continues on the sequel.
