Original Crow Director Clarifies Reboot Movie Critiques & Its Effect On Brandon Lee’s “Legacy”

The original director of The Crow clarifies his critiques about the reboot. The Crow was originally a 1994 film starring Brandon Lee as Eric Draven, a murdered man who comes back from the dead to seek vengeance on those who murdered him and his fiancé. This version of The Crow was directed by Alex Proyas. Now, The Crow is being remade into a film of the same name, starring Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven.

Speaking on Facebook, Proyas clears the air on his opinion on The Crow remake. Proyas started by assuming the best in the team of 2024’s The Crow, saying that he does not “get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work.”

On the other hand, Proyas went on to say that “the fan’s response speaks volumes” and mentioned that his version of The Crow was more than “just a movie” but a “testament to [Brandon Lee’s lost brilliance and tragic loss].” Check out his quote below:

I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work. And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan’s response speaks volumes. THE CROW is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain.

Since The Crow released first-look images, fans have been abuzz online with criticism towards the upcoming remake. Many people thought that Skarsgård’s look was not only unfaithful, but cartoonish, and insulting towards the legacy of the Brandon Lee film. Lee died while making The Crow, due to a tragic accident on set. One such detractor of The Crow remake was Proyas, who said “Eric Draven’s having a bad hair day. Next reboot thanks” in response to the images.

Since the release of The Crow trailer, the tides have shifted a bit in terms of the fan’s responses. While audiences still sound loyal to the Lee version of the film, a number of people were more optimistic after seeing the trailer. 2024’s The Crow remake will still likely be hurt by comparison to the beloved 1994 film, but it is not suffering as much vitriol as it did previously.

Unfortunately, even The Crow trailer could not save the remake from criticism from Proyas. Even with audiences seeming slightly more positive to the film, it is disheartening to see the original director so disappointed in the work. Hopefully, The Crow can actually do some justice to the original upon its release this June.

This revival pays homage to the original while introducing new elements to captivate the modern audience.
