After a new glimpse at the film was revealed with the recent poster, Universal has released the official Oppenheimer trailer. Christopher Nolan is at the helm for the upcoming biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer and his time working on the Manhattan Project. Nolan, best known for helming The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Tenet, has also penned the script for Oppenheimer, based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s biography American Prometheus, and is producing with Emma Thomas and Charles Roven.
Nolan has assembled his biggest ensemble cast to date for Oppenheimer, some of whom include Cillian Murphy as the titular theoretical physicist, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, Kenneth Branagh, and Gary Oldman. Filming on Oppenheimer kicked off this past January in New Mexico and ran for four months, concluding this past May. As post-production gets underway on the film, audiences are finally getting their first glimpse at Oppenheimer.
With one year to date remaining until it hits theaters, Universal Pictures has unveiled the official Oppenheimer trailer, and time is once again paramount in a Nolan movie. Alongside fiery color images of what is in all likelihood an exploding atomic bomb, the trailer includes black-and-white shots of Murphy’s Oppenheimer, giving a sense for what will be a very different visual palette for the director. This Oppenheimer movie teaser trailer is one that some moviegoers have seen before, since it premiered in theaters last week coupled with screenings of Jordan Peele’s Nope. The audio laid over the montage of images teases a great deal of tension in Nolan’s unpacking of Oppenheimer’s legacy, which has often seen him labeled “the Father of the Atomic Bomb,” though how exactly the story will be told remains obscured. The only thing that’s clear from this early footage is that Oppenheimer will be different from every Nolan movie that’s come before, particularly when considering this will be his first take on the biopic genre.
Fans of the director’s work have been eagerly following the movie’s production, as various Oppenheimer set photos have hinted at the approach to the time period. Additionally, much has been made over the fact that Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie share a release date, with excitement coming not only from the double-dose of filmmaking talent, but the sheer contrast of expectations from those two projects. Now, with Nolan’s film looking to embrace black-and-white cinematography, prospective viewers can be confident that those two movies will practically be as different from each other as possible – which makes for quite the unique double bill.
