Photos taken on the set of Oppenheimer reveal that Casey Affleck may have been cast in the upcoming Christopher Nolan movie. Nolan, the filmmaker behind Inception, Interstellar, and The Dark Knight Trilogy, has recently been focusing on historical dramas such as Dunkirk. Oppenheimer is Nolan’s latest film, set to be released summer of 2023. It focuses on the true-life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American physicist who became known as “the father of the atomic bomb.” The movie is based on the biography American Prometheus written by Martin J. Sherwin and Kai Bird. Oppenheimer is played by Cillian Murphy, alongside Emily Blunt, who plays his wife Kitty Oppenheimer. Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, and Benny Safdie have also joined the star-studded cast.
Affleck is an award-winning actor known for his performances in Manchester by the Sea, Gerry, and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. He has won two Academy Awards, including Best Actor for his role in Manchester by the Sea. Affleck and Nolan have worked together before when Affleck played Matthew McConaughey’s grown-up son in Interstellar. Since then, Affleck has starred in movies like The World To Come and Every Breath You Take. In the intervening years, there have been two sexual harassment lawsuits filed against Affleck, both for routinely harassing women on set. After the allegations, Affleck stayed largely out of the spotlight and even bowed out of presenting at the Academy Awards the year after he won. Now, it looks like Affleck will be returning with a role in Nolan’s upcoming movie.
Based on set photos released by the Daily Mail, Affleck’s next film looks to be Nolan’s Oppenheimer. In the photos, he is wearing some kind of uniform, with a brown long sleeve shirt tucked into slacks with a matching tie and belt. No official details about Affleck’s role have been released, with the only available information about his involvement in the film being the photo from the set.

Some details about Affleck’s role can be gleaned from the photo. Considering his costume and the time period the movie is set in, it seems likely that Affleck will be playing a soldier or officer. His costume is almost identical to that of Damon, who plays Leslie Groves, an Army Corps of Engineers officer. Perhaps audiences will see Affleck acting alongside Damon in a military setting and interacting with Oppenheimer in that way.
Since Affleck is such an acclaimed actor, it’s interesting that his role in Oppenheimer has not been officially announced. Perhaps the release of this photo will prompt an official announcement from Oppenheimer’s producers. With the massive amount of people in the cast, it’s almost become a bit of a joke that Nolan is getting just about everyone in Hollywood to star in his next movie.
