Only One of Yugi’s Monsters is a Staple of the Real Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Game, & It’s Not Exodia or the God Cards

Despite not being among the most famous Yu-Gi-Oh! creatures in Yugi’s deck, Summoned Skull found its place as one of the best monsters in the card game. For many years, this unassuming normal monster (meaning it has no effect), remained one of the most reliable and sought-after cards. It completely eclipsed iconic creatures like the Egyptian God Cards, becoming more prevalent than even Yugi’s signature monster, the Dark Magician.

The card surpassed most others in Yugi’s deck when brought to the real game due to its incredible stats, at 2500 attack points, with only one monster as a sacrifice required for its summon. Compared to the Dark Magician, whose attack points were the same but required tributes, Summoned Skull was significantly better. This caused him to become a staple on most decks during the early years of Yu-Gi-Oh!’s competitive scene.

Summoned Skull Has Accompanied Yugi Since The Beginning

Summoned Skull was first introduced during episode two of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. The card was summoned by Atem in a desperate attempt to win the duel against Pegasus before the time limit set by the creator of the game. After that, the card was not seen until episode 5, which is most likely its most well-known and infamous contribution to the anime. Yugi used the card to defeat Weevil and his insect deck in an unconventional, and frankly illegal, manner. He used the card’s electrical power to electrocute his opponent’s Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth.

From that point onward, Summoned Skull became one of Yugi’s aces, making appearances whenever the protagonist needed a powerful and reliable monster. Despite his importance in Yugi’s deck, the monster never managed to come out of the shadow of the show’s most prominent cards. Even when Summoned Skull was objectively better than the Dark Magician, the latter was always considered Yugi’s signature monster. Whenever support for the protagonist’s deck was released by Konami, Summoned Skull would receive at most one or two cards, while other monsters keep receiving new tools even to this day.

Summoned Skull Was The King Of Yu-Gi-Oh!

His low-level and high attack made him the optimal choice

When the Yu-Gi-Oh! card game was released to the public, the number of cards available for players to add to their deck was significantly smaller than now. With only a few card packs and structure decks to build a strategy around, there were only a handful of cards that could fit in any deck. One of these staples was Summoned Skull, considered one of the strongest cards due to its level and attack points. Almost all players had a copy of Summoned Skull added to their decks, as a monster with such power for just one tribute was extremely effective.

As the game became more complex and new powerful cards began appearing, Summoned Skull was forgotten. An attempt was made to bring this iconic monster back to the metagame by creating new support for the card in the form of Archfiend monsters. In the end, not even these new cards were enough to make Summon Skull the meta-defining staple that he was at the beginning of the franchise. In the anime, he was always overshadowed by more iconic monsters, such as Dark Magician, the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, or Exodia. Still, this imposing creature will forever be one of Yu-Gi-Oh!’s first and most beloved monsters.
