Only 1 Legion Member Actually Kills for the Entity: Dead by Daylight Theory Explained

Only 1 Legion Member Actually Kills for the Entity: Dead by Daylight Theory Explained

Warning: spoilers ahead for Dead by Daylight #4!A fascinating new Dead by Daylight theory suggests that only one member of the Legion is actually killing for the Entity. The Legion is one of the more interesting killers in the Dead by Daylight universe because the ‘killer’ actually consists of four separate individuals. While only one can be played per game, players can swap between Frank, Julie, Joey and Susie through their cosmetics. However, their recent bloody origin story suggests that only one of them is truly human.

In Dead by Daylight #4 by Nadia Shammas and Dillon Snook, the group are shown being taken by the Entity as they step into the Fog, never to be seen again. However, as each member vanishes one-by-one, Susie is left all alone before going after her friends. She eventually finds them, but in a shocking twist, the comic’s ending suggests that the versions of Frank, Julie and Joey she’s seeing are actually physical constructs crafted by the Entity to keep her there and willing to kill for it.

Only 1 Legion Member Actually Kills for the Entity: Dead by Daylight Theory Explained

It’s a disheartening end to Susie’s story in the Dead by Daylight mythos, but based on some interesting details, it’s entirely possible that the game’s players are actually controlling these manifestations whenever they pick to play as Frank, Julie or Joey.

Theory: Susie Is the Only Playable Human Legion Member in Dead by Daylight

Frank, Julie and Joey Are Actually Creations of the Entity

The most convincing evidence behind this theory is how the illusions of the other Legion members appear to Susie as she accepts her role as a killer in the Entity’s realm. Each one wears the exact mask and outfit that come with their basic appearance in the game, rather than appearing unmasked. There’s a strong case to be made that when players pick one of these other members, they’re actually playing as the Entity itself as it maintains the illusion that they’re there with Susie, convincing her to continue killing to feed on the hope of the survivors. It knows that being alone is her greatest fear, and that she’d rather be with them killing than “be apart for a moment.”

Another important element regarding the Susie theory is that Dead by Daylight lore has firmly established that killers don’t interact with each other. Unlike the survivors who can gather around the campfire and speak with each other between Trials, the killers lie in wait, completely alone until the Entity unleashes them so it can feed. If Susie is actually able to see Frank, Julie and Joey as shown in the comic, it confirms that those versions of her friends aren’t real. Susie is the only true Legion member that was picked by the Entity to do its bidding, and the others are still out there somewhere in the Fog, with the Entity merely using their appearances to manipulate Susie.

This begs the question: where are Susie’s real friends? In recent years, Dead by Daylight has established countless unexplored realms outside of the Trials that serve as likely candidates. When Frank, Julie and Joey disappear into the Fog, it’s possible they could have found themselves in the Void, a mysterious alternate plane where the Entity disposes of people it doesn’t find useful. There are other realms where unspeakable creatures await, including just outside the Observer’s tower from the Archives. If the Susie theory is true, her friends could actually be out there somewhere, forever lost in the Entity’s realm.

This is only a theory in a sea full of potential ideas regarding the mystery of the Entity’s realm. However, if it turns out to be true, this would completely upend everything fans know about the Legion, as it recontextualizes who they play as whenever they queue up for a game. The Legion has become one of Dead by Daylight‘s most popular killers, and if this theory holds ground, the idea of Susie being the only true human they can play as is a fascinating twist on the fan-favorite characters.
