One Piece: Which Straw Hat Character Are You, Based On Your MBTI Type?

With the release of the One Piece movie Red and the announcement of the manga coming end, fans have been gobbling up as much content as possible in preparation. As one of the big three anime to surface in the early 2000s, One Piece has gained a massive following of dedicated fans as well as an amazing line-up of over 1000 episodes throughout its running. While the anime has yet to catch up to the manga, it’s safe to say that the show’s end will leave a big gap to fill in the heart of anime lovers everywhere.

Throughout the anime, viewers are introduced to a massive amount of characters that differ greatly from each other in their own unique ways. Fans often question which character they are most like, and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator can answer this better than many other personality tests. Assigning each of the Straw Hats to their respective MBTI, where do fan-favorite characters like Chopper and Nico Robin fall on the scale?

Jinbe: ISTJ

One Piece: Which Straw Hat Character Are You, Based On Your MBTI Type?

An ISTJ through and through, Jinbe is an extremely sensible character who adores his homeland just as much as he loves being a part of the Straw Hats. Fiercely loyal, he holds his morals up above regular standards and keeps those deserving of his protection safe.

Jinbe is incredibly down to earth and unbothered by following the orders of the people he deems worthy, a common trait of those falling under ISTJ. Deeply committed to the task given to him, the helmsmen first refused to join the crew until his other obligations were taken care of. When Fish Tiger passed away, Jinbe swore to uphold his values as his own, yet another trait of ISTJs.

Usopp: ENTP

Usopp from One Piece.

Regarded as the character that almost ruined the show, Usopp is the sniper of the Straw Hats who is notorious for telling tall tales of his courageous pirate adventures. Due to his low self-worth and past traumas, he tries to create a fake image of himself.

Usopp is so very human both inside and out, a trait of most ENTPs. For this, he views himself as weak, causing him to come across as a coward and unable to be his true self. He is full of flaws, trying to hide them from everyone and fake it till he makes it, which rarely works out for him. ENTPs often try to sell themselves to those around them, much like Usopp does throughout the series.

Brook: ISFP

Brook eating takoyaki curry on the Thousand Sunny in One Piece.

ISFP is one of the most complex personalities of all the Myers-Briggs types, which can be seen well within Brook, who has many layers and a strong will. At first, Brook regularly questions whether he is worthy to be a part of the Straw Hat Pirates.

Knowing this, it’s clear to see that Brook has high hopes and standards of himself, always exclaiming how he wants to right his wrongdoings. Like ISFPs, Brook is a sentimental man who is prone to loneliness and is happy to talk about his emotions. He is strict with his promises and isn’t afraid to lecture people about their actions.

Vivi: ESFJ

Vivi in One Piece

An inspiration to the kingdom of Alabasta and holding status with the royal family, Vivi uplifts others with her welcoming kindness, something ESFJs are proficient at. She is responsible and dependable, caring deeply for the people of her homeland.

Perhaps her best trait lies in her powerful moral compass, which is comparable to most ESFJ people. Vivi tries to be as helpful as she can, specifically during her journey through the desert with the Straw Hats. Though she wasn’t physically with the Straw Hats for very long, she had a lasting effect on the crew and remains a part of them no matter where she goes.

Zoro: ISTP

Zoro crosses swords in One Piece

Zoro is the embodiment of neutrality, rarely ever revealing a sliver of emotion or regard for other people’s feelings. His secretive and distrusting nature are present in ISTPs like himself, though this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

As a contender for the spot of One Piece’s strongest swordsmen, it’d be counterproductive if he were naive, so it’s understandable that he is skeptical of things he doesn’t understand. He is also observant, enjoying alone time to take things in, characteristic of an ISTP. Likewise, Zoro flaunts his sharp reflexes through his excellent and creative swordsmanship.

Franky: ISTP

Smart enough to turn himself into a cyborg, Franky is a daring experimentalist like many ISTPs, striving to go above and beyond with each intelligent trial. He exceeds at thinking outside the box.

He is even capable of making and storing his own power source in a compartment in his stomach as well as three other drinks that can change his personality. ISTPs are known for being the sole source of their own power, not looking to gain it by using or being someone else. His innovative inventions are figuratively and literally an extension of him, reflecting his ISTP nature.

Robin: INTJ

Nico Robin from One Piece.

Nico Robin is arguably one of the best characters in One Piece, bringing an extremely intellectual view to every situation, making confident predictions and quick judgments based on the information she has gathered, and being ever curious to attain the truth. Each of these traits reflects her INTJ personality.

Furthermore, she has a morbid and witty sense of humor, finding things that most people would deem dark to be quite amusing. Like many INTJs, Robin does her best to decipher great mysteries with a direct and focused approach, which is exactly what lead her to discovering the City of Gold Shandora. As one of the strongest characters in One Piece, there is little she cannot do once she puts her mind to it.

Sanji: ESTJ

Vinsmoke Sanji preparing a meal in One Piece.

Capable of deceiving malicious masterminds, Sanji is brutally honest and highly sensible, always there just in time when his friends need him. These traits as well as his great emphasis on the value of integrity embody the spirit of an ESTJ.

A master of cuisine with an amazing work ethic, Sanji holds tradition close to him and always makes sure to look tip-top with his own style. Being respectful of those who are deserving and staying organized are significantly important to him, assigning him to the ESTJ personality type without question.

Chopper: ISFJ

The doctor of the Straw Hats, Chopper, is someone that shouldn’t be underestimated despite his adorable look, though he is the sweetest deer around. Since the early days of One Piece, he has continued to be a fan favorite.

Holding nearly every trait of an ISFJ, he has plenty of medical knowledge and a heart too big for its own good, trying his utmost to help everyone surrounding him. He remains one of the most down-to-earth characters of the series, though he can be a tad hard on himself when it comes to curing people due to his high standards.

Nami: ESFP

Bringing high energy to any room she’s in like typical ESFPs, Nami’s dramatic mannerisms and over-enthusiastic nature draws people to her quite easily. She is also capable of being wildly entertaining and gets bored easily.

Nami could not be any more ESFP, sometimes becoming completely absorbed in her own excitement. Nami’s excessive love of money is one of the worst traits among the Straw Hats, along with her need to constantly be in the spotlight, though some of these ESFP-like moments are what she is loved for as well.

Luffy: ENFJ

As the main protagonist of the series, Luffy puts a high value on freedom, saving several oppressed kingdoms from their selfish and unsympathetic dictators. These factors and more land him in the ENFJ category.

What really makes Luffy an ENFJ is his endlessly adventurous spirit and his ability to solve problems creatively. He is a fun-loving leader who deserves the utmost respect despite his often-silly way of going about things. His charisma and passion greatly inspire those around him and mesmerize his foes, especially with the addition of his unique fighting style.
