One Piece Set Images Show Pirate Ships For Live Action Netflix Show

One Piece set photos reveal a first look at the pirate ships for the live-action Netflix show. The original anime series is based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga series of the same name and follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy who acquires the properties of rubber after accidentally eating a Devil Fruit. With his newfound powers, Luffy sets sail with his crew, dubbed the Straw Hat Pirates, to explore the Grand Line in search of the titular mythical treasure in order to become the next King of the Pirates.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation was first announced in 2017, though the cast just recently started coming together this past November. Who Killed Sara? star, Iñaki Godoy, will portray the role of the lead protagonist, Luffy. He is joined by Fear Street‘s Emily Rudd as the Straw Hat Pirates’ navigator, Nami, and Boiling Point‘s Taz Skylar as the crew’s chef, Sanji. Pacific Rim: Uprising star, Mackenyu, and Greenleaf star, Jacob Gibson, round out the cast as the crew’s combatants, the swordsman Roronoa Zoro and the sharpshooter Usopp, respectively.

Now, new set photos appear to reveal a first look at the pirate ships being constructed for Netflix’s live-action One Piece show. The images were taken by @Risebito and then shared by @OP_Netflix_Fan. There is a total of four photos of several large ships in various stages of construction. See the set photos below:

While production has yet to begin on Netflix’s live-action adaptation, these new set photos provide a window into the show’s pre-production process at Cape Town Film Studios in South Africa, where the One Piece series will also be filmed. While the photos were taken from a distance away, the ships do appear to resemble those seen in the anime, one of them bearing a striking resemblance to the Miss Love Duck, a large pink ship with a duck as a figurehead. There is also a larger ship still in the earlier stages of being built, the sheer size of it suggesting it may be The Dreadnaught Sabre.

There’s always a great amount of apprehension amongst fans when such a beloved anime is translated into live-action, even in the case of One Piece with original creator, Eiichiro Oda, serving as an executive producer on Netflix’s series. The live-action One Piece is from the same production company, Tomorrow Studios, that was behind Netflix’s last live-action adaptation of a popular anime series, Cowboy Bebop, which was canceled after just one season. Hopefully, One Piece won’t suffer the same fate when it premieres on the streaming service.
