One Piece Just Evolved Luffy’s Gear 5 Again, Making It Even More Broken

Warning: Contains spoilers for chapter #1111 of One Piece.

Just when it looked like Luffy’s Gear Five couldn’t get any more ridiculous, One Piece has revealed another new aspect of the Nika’s fruit’s powers, making it more broken than ever. The latest chapter reveals Gear Five’s wacky powers may be evolving past all logic as Luffy faces off against the Five Elders with the most unbelievable attacks Luffy has ever used.

Chapter #1111 of One Piece, hints that Luffy’s Gear Five may be capable of much more than what was seen at Wano, including slowing down time and conjuring objects out of nowhere as is commonly seen in cartoons. In the chapter, Saint Saturn shoots venom at Luffy, Dorry, and Broggy. In the short time that Saturn launches his attack, Luffy grabs a tree nearby, nibbles it down to the shape of a baseball bat, conjures a bucket of paint and a helmet out of nowhere, paints the bat, and uses it to hit the balls of venom back at Saturn.

While this sort of wackiness is nothing out of the ordinary for Gear Five, the fact that Luffy was able to do the entire gag within the few seconds before Saturn’s attack landed suggests Gear Five’s powers may be evolving beyond a regular awakening. Gear Five may no longer be a simple extension of Luffy’s rubbery powers, but may involve manipulating reality and logic itself, personifying Sun God Nika’s innate sense of freedom.

One Piece Proves Luffy’s Gear 5 Is Not Goofy, It’s Terrifying

Luffy’s new epic moment in the latest chapter of One Piece finally proves Gear Five isn’t just goofy and cartoonish but can be genuinely terrifying.

Gear Five May Surpass Regular Devil Fruit Awakenings

While some might argue that Luffy was simply moving very quickly or that Saint Saturn was a great distance away, Luffy’s actions span nearly an entire page, implying that a good amount of time does pass while Luffy carefully crafts his counterattack. That said, possibly the most confounding part of Luffy’s new technique is the bucket of paint and safety helmet that Luffy fetches out of the air as though they were hiding in his pocket all along.

Arguably, this is a gag that has been used in cartoons time and time again where characters pull out massive hammers and other random objects out of seemingly nowhere, and now it seems Luffy has also gained this ridiculous power. Until now, even Gear Five’s most ridiculous feats, like grabbing lightning, could be explained as Luffy simply applying his rubbery powers to objects around him as devil fruit awakenings usually do. However, his latest move can no longer be explained even by One Piece‘s rather liberal sense of logic when it comes to devil fruits in particular.

There May Be Another Evolution for Gear Five

With imagination as the only limit, Luffy has only scratched the surface of his powers

It appears as though the Nika Fruit can freely manipulate logic and reality itself to some extent, allowing Luffy to do whatever he pleases while he fights freely like supposedly Nika did. If Luffy can truly “conjure” objects at will, then perhaps there is still another unexplored level to Gear Five’s abilities. It is hard to say what the limit may be to the size and number of objects Luffy can create or to what extent he can manipulate time and the laws of physics but discovering these might just give Luffy the power to defeat the Five Elders.

In all, Luffy’s Gear Five continues to take fans by surprise with nearly every new chapter and is a testament to creator Eiichiro Oda’s sheer creativity and imagination that likely surpasses Luffy’s. If anything, it is clear that Luffy’s final battle against Kaido at Wano only scratched the surface of Gear Five’s true powers, which will likely continue to evolve to ridiculous lengths as the story of One Piece progresses.
