One Of 2023’s Biggest Horror Flops Gets Streaming Release Date

The Last Voyage of the Demeter, the Dracula movie that became one of 2023’s biggest box office disappointments, has secured its official streaming release date. Based on the chapter “The Captain’s Log” from Bram Stoker’s iconic novel, The Last Voyage of the Demeter follows the titular ship as it attempts to make the voyage from Transylvania to London with Dracula aboard. Despite earning the praise of several high-profile voices in the horror genre, including Guillermo del Toro and Stephen King, the movie only managed to recoup $21.8 million in worldwide box office against a budget of $45 million.

Per a new report from Bloody Disgusting, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is set to arrive on Paramount+ with Showtime on February 11, 2024. This streaming release marks six months since the movie made its original theatrical debut in August 2023, with the movie also having been made available on digital a little over three weeks later. A subsequent Blu-ray and DVD release also followed in October last year.

Could The Last Voyage Of The Demeter Find Fresh Life On Streaming?

One Of 2023’s Biggest Horror Flops Gets Streaming Release Date

Directed by Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’s André Øvredal, The Last Voyage of the Demeter marked a significant departure from 2023’s other disappointing Dracula movie, Renfield. Trading tongue-in-cheek humor for a return to the horror sensibilities of the classic Hammer films, the movie’s underlying premise and talented cast seemed destined to provide audiences with a much-needed return to Dracula’s origins as a terrifying, bloodthirsty villain.

Yet despite prominent figures like King proudly declaring The Last Voyage of the Demeter to be “a throat-ripping good time” reminiscent of some of the best monster movies to come out of the 1960s and ’70s, Øvredal’s spin on the world’s most famous vampire largely failed to resonate with critics and saw increasingly dismal box-office returns. Continuing a disappointing trend that has seen several successive attempts to adapt Stoker’s bloodsucker stumble, the movie’s box-office failure even fell short of Renfield’s similarly grim $26.9 million haul.

However, it is not at all unheard of for chronically overlooked titles to reignite interest and find much wider audiences once they begin life on streaming, and Øvredal’s vampire movie could very well find redemption on Paramount+ with Showtime. Whether it is actually capable of generating enough interest to justify a potential The Last Voyage of the Demeter 2 remains to be seen, but at least it may convince previously reluctant viewers to take a chance.
