One Of 2023’s Best Horror Movies Is Finally Streaming On Netflix

The Netflix release date for Thanksgiving has been revealed. The 2023 slasher movie, which was directed by Eli Roth, is an expansion of the Thanksgiving-themed parody trailer he contributed to the 2007 throwback double feature presentation Grindhouse. It followed a group of teenagers who were accidentally involved in a Black Friday massacre in the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. During the following year’s Thanksgiving celebration, they find themselves the primary targets of a rampaging serial killer wearing a mask depicting the former Plymouth Colony governor John Carver.

Collider has revealed that the Thanksgiving streaming release is now officially set for February 17. Exactly three months after its theatrical premiere, the movie will make its triumphant debut on Netflix. This release also comes just three days after Valentine’s Day, keeping the holiday theme going in spite of the fact that this streaming date lands nowhere near Thanksgiving.

Will Thanksgiving Become a Hit on Netflix?

One Of 2023’s Best Horror Movies Is Finally Streaming On Netflix

The Eli Roth movie has the opportunity to become a Netflix hit, cementing its ability to succeed in many different arenas. It has already become a critical and theatrical success. In addition to its Certified Fresh score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie grossed $46.5 million worldwide against its medium-sized $15 million budget.

The strangely timed streaming release of the Thanksgiving movie may hinder its ability to draw in viewers who are more invested in holiday-themed viewing. However, the movie’s popularity in theaters will likely translate into plenty of at-home viewings nonetheless. It also comes during a period where there is a dearth of new horror movies at the box office, with the only major competition being the poorly-performing horror romance Lisa Frankenstein until the release of Blumhouse’s Imaginary on March 8.

Even if it doesn’t become a hit right away, Thanksgiving will have another opportunity for streaming success next year. The upcoming Thanksgiving 2 is currently set to premiere in 2025, and interest in the sequel may drive viewers to catch up with the original on streaming during the lead-up to its release. However, the original movie’s seemingly indefatigable ability to succeed likely means that it will not have to wait that long to strike a chord with online audiences.
