Ocean’s 8 Poster Lines Up The Movie’s All Star Cast

Ocean’s 8 Poster Lines Up The Movie’s All Star Cast

A new poster for the heist film Ocean’s Eight features the movie’s all-star cast literally lined up and ready for action. The original Ocean’s franchise grossed $1.1 billion worldwide, and now the brand will carry on with an all-female take. Steven Soderbergh remains involved as producer, with Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) taking over directing duties.

Sandra Bullock heads up the Ocean’s Eight cast as Debbie Ocean, the sister of George Clooney’s Ocean’s Eleven heist-master Danny Ocean. Cate Blanchett plays Bullock’s partner Lou. Anne Hathaway plays Daphne Kluger, while Rihanna takes on the role of Nine Ball. Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Awkwafina round out Bullock’s team. Most plot and character details remain under wraps.

A sharp-looking new Ocean’s Eight poster assembles the main cast and drops the new tagline “Every con has its pro.” Cast member Sarah Paulson shared the cool new poster on Twitter. Sunglasses clearly are not optional for this team of criminals. Check out the image below:

The poster may not indicate it but the movie does feature some male cast members. Matt Damon will return to play Ocean’s Eleven original Linus Caldwell, though his role is only a cameo. Comedy legend Carl Reiner also gets a cameo, reprising his Ocean’s Eleven role. Kim Kardashian, Dakota Fanning, Anna Wintour, Olivia Munn and other luminaries appear in cameos during the film’s central heist scene, set during the Met Gala.

Though the clear purpose of Ocean’s Eight is to revive the franchise, star Sandra Bullock says the movie is not a reboot. Instead, Bullock characterizes the new movie as a continuation of the original series. Through-lines from the old movies to the new include Damon’s returning character, and Bullock’s connection to Clooney’s. Of course, the new film will also adhere to the ancient rules of the heist genre. The heist genre code became set in stone long ago, and there’s very little wiggle-room within those strictures. Plot mechanics and style tend to get emphasized over character detail in these films.

Steven Soderbergh understood the rules of the heist game perfectly when he made the original Ocean’s films. With their breezy style and casual cool, those movies brought life to a genre that had been moribund for years. The Ocean’s Eight cast brings the same star power and cool-factor as Clooney, Damon, Pitt and company. We’ll see if Gary Ross possesses the directorial chops to pull it all together the way Soderbergh did.
