Ocarina of Time’s Happy Mask Salesman Is In More Games Than You Think

Ocarina of Time’s Happy Mask Salesman Is In More Games Than You Think

The Happy Mask Salesman is an iconic NPC in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, but his presence extends to other Nintendo titles. Setting up the Happy Mask Shop in Ocarina of Time, the Happy Mask Salesman appoints Link as a “happiness salesman.” This initiates the mask trading quest, in which players can choose to sell all four masks to receive the Mask of Truth. Despite disappearing once Ganon takes over Hyrule Castle, a sequence during the game’s credits shows the Happy Mask Salesman to have seemingly relocated to Lon Lon Ranch.

The next game in the series, Majora’s Mask, has its entire plot revolve around the actions of the Happy Mask Salesman, who remembers Link from Ocarina. Prior to the beginning of Majora’s Mask, the titular mask was stolen from the Happy Mask Salesman by Tatl and Tael, Skull Kid’s fairy companions, and the salesman enlists Link for assistance in confronting Skull Kid and retrieving Majora’s Mask. The Happy Mask Salesman’s marquee appearances see him go from side quest NPC to a character used in main narrative impetus, but he’s appeared in more Nintendo games than just the two N64 Zelda games.

Zelda’s Happy Mask Salesman Cameos In Other Nintendo Games

The Happy Mask Salesman makes only minor cameos in both Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but not as a playable character, despite players wishing for more Zelda fighters in Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Happy Mask Salesman is available as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and as a Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The NPC makes a more substantive appearance, however, in another Zelda title: the oft-forgotten Oracle of Ages, which released for the Game Boy Color a year after Majora’s Mask. Despite the briefness of his role, the Happy Mask Salesman returns to his status as being relevant to the main plot instead of an Easter egg.

All is not well for the Happy Mask Salesman, however. While still the proprietor of his Happy Mask Shop, the Happy Mask Salesman appears to be in dire straights following Majora’s Mask. Oracle of Ages and Seasons are underrated games in the larger Zelda franchise, including similar, but distinct stories that could be altered if the two were connected via a Game Boy Color Link Cable. In Oracle of Ages, the Happy Mask Salesman has a mask shop in Lynna City. Upon seeing the player, he asks for food, since he is starving. In return for Tasty Meat, players are given the Doggie Mask, which is required to complete a larger trading quest.

Nintendo made Oracle of Ages and Seasons more widely available in 2013 by releasing them for the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console, in case players would like to find the Happy Mask Salesman themselves. Players may be able to get another cameo from this strange NPC soon, though. Even if players cannot access a 3DS or Game Boy Color, the Happy Mask Salesman might return in BOTW‘s sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, allowing players further options to investigate this mysterious character originally from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
