NYCC 2023: Jason Blum On Five Nights At Freddy’s, Spawn & Blumhouse

Adapted from the extremely popular video game of the same name, Five Nights At Freddy’s follows Mike Schmidt. Mike is struggling to hold down a job and raise his younger sister when he is offered the night security job at the long-abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. Mike’s time at Freddy’s goes from strange to terrifying as he learns the horrifying truth about Freddy Fazbera’s Pizzeria and why it was shut down.

Scott Cawthon developed the original game and wrote the script with Seth Cuddeback and Five Nights At Freddy’s director Emma Tammi. The script was written based on an idea by Cawthon, Chris Lee Hill, and Tyler MacIntyre. Five Nights At Freddy’s stars a powerhouse cast with Matthew Lillard, Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Mary Stuart Masterson.

Screen Rant spoke with Jason Blum at New York Comic Con about his upcoming horror movie, Five Nights At Freddy’s. He teased Easter eggs from throughout the video game franchise and discussed the collaboration with game creator Scott Cawthorn. Blum also revealed who would win in a fight, M3GAN or Freddy, as well as teased what Spwan can bring to the superhero genre.

Jason Blum Talks Five Nights At Freddy’s & More

NYCC 2023: Jason Blum On Five Nights At Freddy’s, Spawn & Blumhouse

Screen Rant: You said we could see Spawn in theaters as soon as 2025?

Jason Blum: I did.

What are you excited to bring to the superhero genre that’s uniquely Blumhouse?

Jason Blum: Yes, I’m going to bring the Blumhouse edge. It’s going to be edgy and original as compared to other superhero movies. It’s gonna definitely feel like the Blumhouse version of a superhero movie.

I love it! And then, can you talk a little bit about collaborating with Scott to stay true to what people love about the FNAF game while expanding it into a more character-driven story?

Jason Blum: Yeah, I think we did something unique with Scott, which was he led the notion of… I think Hollywood makes a mistake when they’re using IP to try and make a movie for people who know the IP and people who don’t. And with Scott, we really focused on making a movie for the fans and really only for the fans. If other people come and other people like it, that’s great, too. But the movie really was in service of the fans, and I think they’ll be happy when they see it.

And then, so you’ve done kind of a few movies with this possessed robot. M3GAN, where it’s AI, and then you have FNAF where it’s ghosts. Who would win in a fight between Freddy and M3GAN?

Jason Blum: That’s a tough one. I think M3GAN might win.

Can you talk about incorporating Easter eggs from FNAF that go beyond the original game?

Jason Blum: Yes, we did a lot of that, but you’ll have to see the movie to see them.
