NVIDIA RTX 4090 Laptops Are Almost Here, But Be Prepared For Sticker Shock

Laptops featuring NVIDIA‘s all-new 40-series GPUs are about to hit the market in a matter of days, but they will cost gamers a small fortune. NVIDIA unveiled its RTX 40-series laptop GPUs at CES 2023 last week, after launching the Ada Lovelace lineup for desktops last year. As per NVIDIA’s announcement, the entire range of RTX 4000 GPUs will come to laptops, including the RTX 4050, RTX 4060, RTX 4070, RTX 4080, and the top-of-the-line RTX 4090. The cards are aimed at gamers and creators, with NVIDIA claiming that they will deliver a generational leap over their predecessors in terms of raw performance.

XMG’s Neo 16 (E23) laptop with NVIDIA’s RTX 40-series GPUs has been listed on BestWare, revealing how expensive these devices will be. The laptop can be configured with a variety of graphics cards, staring with the RTX 4060 and going all the way up to the RTX 4090. The base configuration includes the RTX 4060 and costs a whopping €2,199 (~ $2,360), while users can upgrade to the RTX 4070 for an additional €375 (~ $402). For the RTX 4080, users will have to pay a further €1,050 (~ $1,127), while the top-end configuration with the RTX 4090 will cost buyers at least €3,886 (~ $4,171).

The rest of the hardware specs are also pretty impressive, and include a high-end processor, a high-refresh display, ample RAM, and a high-capacity battery. The laptop features a 16-inch 240Hz 2,560 × 1,600 IPS G-SYNC display and is powered by an Intel Core i9-13900HX CPU. It supports up to 64GB of DDR5 memory and up to 2x M.2 SSDs in RAID 0 or 1. It sports a 93 Wh Li-Po battery with up to a 330 watt PSU. The laptop comes with a membrane keyboard, but can be configured with a Cherry MX mechanical keypad for €125 extra.

Pricing for NVIDIA’s latest desktop GPUs has been a concern for gamers ever since they were launched last year, and the latest development suggests that the Ada Lovelace cards will be expensive even in their mobile avatar. The pricing is especially brutal for the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090, and it’s unlikely to change for the better any time soon in the absence of serious competition from AMD or Intel.

As for AMD’s mobile GPU venture, the company unveiled a slew of new products at CES 2023, including the Ryzen 7000 mobile APUs and Radeon RX 7000 laptop GPUs. Based on RDNA 3 architecture, AMD’s new GPUs include the Radeon RX 7600M XT and 7600M for high-end gaming laptops, and the 7700S and 7600S for thin and light notebooks. If the Radeon-powered laptops are priced lower than their NVIDIA counterparts, it would be interesting to see if that would prompt the latter to rationalize the price of its next-gen graphics chips.
