“Not Ideal Timing”: How Oppenheimer Star Made The Best Of A Bad Situation During Intimate Scene

Oppenheimer’s Florence Pugh describes an unfortunate on-set moment involving a camera breaking during a steamy scene. Pugh plays Jean Tatlock in the film, who is one of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s lovers, before he marries Kitty. Pugh is joined by stellar co-stars including the now Oscar-nominated Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy.

Speaking at a Universal panel (via The Hollywood Reporter), Pugh unveils her reaction to the camera breaking during one of Jean and Oppenheimer’s intimate scenes. In a commotion that Pugh describes as “not ideal timing,” the “camera broke when [Pugh and Murphy] were both naked.” Instead of shuddering at the situation, Pugh decided to seize her “moment,” and asked the cameraperson for more details as to what was happening with the camera. Check out the full recount from Pugh below:

“In the middle of our sex scene, the camera broke. No one knows this, but it did. Our camera broke when we were both naked, and it was not ideal timing.

Cillian and I are in this room together. It’s a closed set, so we’re both holding our bodies like this.

[I thought] this is my moment to learn, [and asked the cameraperson] So tell me, what’s wrong with this camera?

You just make your moments. I’m like, ‘What’s going on with the shutter here, buddy?’”

How Will Oppenheimer Fare At The Oscars?

Though Pugh’s role in Oppenheimer was critically acclaimed for the most part, the actress did not manage to score an Oscar nomination for her part. Instead, the Academy nominated Murphy for Best Actor, Blunt for Best Supporting Actress, and Robert Downey Jr. for Best Supporting Actor. The acting awards are three of 13 Oscar nominations for Oppenheimer, which is also in contention for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Director among other awards.

As it stands, both Downey Jr. and Murphy have strong chances at giving Oppenheimer Oscars in their respective acting categories. Both actors took home prizes at the Golden Globe awards, which tends to be a decent —albeit imperfect— predictor of how the Oscars will shake out. Both, however, face some notable competition in their respective categories, with Downey Jr. going up against Barbie’s Ryan Gosling, and Murphy fighting against two-time Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), fellow biopic actors Bradley Cooper (Maestro) and Colman Domingo (Rustin) and indie film star Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction).

Oscars 2024 Best Supporting Actor Predictions: Nominees & Winner

The Best Supporting Actor Oscars 2024 race is incredibly close, as some major stars are vying for the chance to win the award after nominations.

In terms of the major categories, Oppenheimer is also considered a frontrunner for Best Picture. To secure this win, it goes up against Martin Scorsese’s tour-de-force Killers of the Flower Moon and Jonathan Glazer’s haunting Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest, posing worthy competition to the Christopher Nolan film. With so much hype, box office success, and star power behind it, however, Oppenheimer may be in a perfect position to secure the win.
