Nolan’s New Movie First Image Shows Unexpected Look At Cillian Murphy

The first Oppenheimer movie image for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film has arrived and shows Cillian Murphy in black and white. Nolan is one of the most popular filmmakers in the world after delivering massive blockbusters like the Dark Knight trilogy and Inception. After going back to action filmmaking for Tenet, the director’s next project is closer to Dunkirk in the case that it is based on the true story behind the creation of the atomic bomb.

Nolan’s Oppenheimer movie has assembled one of the most exciting casts in Hollywood compared to other upcoming movies. Cillian Murphy stars as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb in World War II, marking the latest collaboration between the actor and director. Oppenheimer also stars Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Dane DeHaan, Alden Ehrenreich and many more. The collection of talent in front of and behind the camera has once again generated a lot of excitement for Nolan’s new movie ahead of its 2023 release date.

Now, the first look Oppenheimer image has been released. Universal Pictures (via The Wrap) shared the black-and-white still of Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer to commemorate the start of production on Nolan’s new movie. The photo signifies the first time IMAX cameras will be used to film for black and white. In addition to the image, Universal describes Oppenheimer as an “epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.” Check out the Oppenheimer image of Murphy below:

Nolan’s New Movie First Image Shows Unexpected Look At Cillian Murphy

The first look of Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer gives audiences just a glimpse of how perfect he could be for the role. The actor has a strong resemblance to the real-life Oppenheimer, but he also seems to have slimmed down even more to capture the father of the atomic bomb’s essence. The cigarette hanging from his mouth is also a signature of Oppenheimer’s. He was known for being a chain smoker, which contributed to the lung cancer he developed later on in his life.

On top of the great first look Oppenheimer image, the black and white nature of the movie is an intriguing unexpected surprise. It isn’t confirmed how much of Oppenheimer will be filmed in black and white, but it will be the first time sections of a movie have been shot in IMAX black and white analogue photography. Considering Nolan’s tendency to mess with time in his movies, it is possible he’ll film past sequences in black and white and the “present” setting of Oppenheimer‘s story in color. In any case, it guarantees that Nolan’s next movie, which will be shot by Hoyte van Hoytema, will once again offer a different visual style.
