No Way Home Ending Explained By Script: Spider-Man & Peter Parker’s Futures

Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s script provides a hint at what lies ahead in Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s future. No Way Home is the third solo outing for Tom Holland’s web-slinger set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which again features his best friend, Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), and love interest, MJ (Zendaya). Despite its release on December 17 amidst a pandemic surge that kept many away from theaters, No Way Home quickly climbed the charts to become one of the highest-grossing movies in history, currently sitting at sixth place behind Avengers: Infinity War.

No Way Home‘s incredible box office success can largely be attributed to its inclusion of multiple legacy villains, including Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’ Doc Ock, and Jamie Foxx’s Electro. To help balance the scales, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men also returned to help Holland’s Peter Parker finish the fight, which was suspected but never confirmed during the lead-up to the film’s release. Now that No Way Home has been playing in theaters for over a month, many of its behind-the-scenes secrets are now able to be spilled.

The film’s screenplay was recently released to the public via Deadline and its final lines shed some light on No Way Home‘s ending and the future of Peter Parker and Spider-Man in the MCU. As he is swinging from webs near the Rockefeller Christmas tree during the film’s final moments, the script reveals he is “liberated from having to juggle two lives. Peter Parker is no more, but Spider-Man lives on.” Check out the portion of the script below:

No Way Home Ending Explained By Script: Spider-Man & Peter Parker’s Futures

The No Way Home script was released online yesterday as part of Sony and Marvel’s plans to put the film into the running for the Best Screenplay Academy Award. However, its release has also revealed some interesting tidbits about Spidey’s latest adventure. For example, a cameo involving a Stan Lee lookalike was cut from the film, and Maguire and Garfield’s characters were officially referred to as “Raimi-Verse” and “Webb-Verse” Spider-Men in the script.

Much of what the script reveals about the ending was previously assumed, but now fans can read exactly what screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers intended. While No Way Home marks the end of a trilogy, it is likely not the last MCU outing for Holland’s Spider-Man, considering the movie’s box office success and the news that another trilogy is already in the works. Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s ending essentially killed off Peter Parker as he was known and provided a soft reboot for the franchise, thereby providing endless possibilities for Spider-Man’s future. The final lines in the script basically confirm as much.
