No Way Home Art Imagines Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man Battling Rhino

Warning: This article contains  SPOILERS for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

A new piece of Spider-Man: No Way Home fan art imagines Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man battling Rhino at the Statue of Liberty. Since its release on December 17, 2021, Disney/Marvel Studios and Sony’s latest collaboration swiftly became the biggest film of last year. As a follow-up to 2019’s Far From HomeNo Way Home sees Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) attempt to make some/all of the world forget the former is Spider-Man. When that spell inevitably goes awry, No Way Home capitalizes on Phase 4’s multiverse theory by bringing a slew of past Sony characters into the MCU.

As an ode to Spider-Man in cinema, the film features villains including Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), and Lizard (Rhys Ifans)—all of which were confirmed to appear before No Way Home’s release. In addition to the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men, many theorized that another, surprise character would appear in No Way Home to form the group of comic book supervillains the Sinister Six. Some thought The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Rhino might make an appearance. While a Rhino silhouette can be seen in the sky near the end of the film, Paul Giamatti never shows his face or fights Spider-Man.

Digital artist Venomhology has shared some No Way Home art imagining Garfield’s Spider-Man battling Rhino. The piece pits the pair against each other in the blockbuster’s climactic battle with the villains. Check it out below:

Giamatti played Aleksei Sytsevich aka Rhino in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opposite Garfield’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Although expected by fans to have a much more prominent role, Rhino was less than a supporting character in the film. Giamatti was then set to return in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which was scheduled for 2016, and most likely would have in the planned Sinister Six movie. However, the lackluster reception of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ultimately resulted in the deal to bring Spider-Man into the MCU with Holland in the role. In more ways than one, No Way Home serves as redemption for Garfield’s webslinger and his villains.

In No Way Home, Holland’s character asks his fellow webslingers “What are like some of the craziest villains that you guys have fought?” After hearing about Holland and Maguire’s close encounters, Garfield laments, “I want to fight an alien… I’m lame. I fought like a Russian guy in a rhinoceros machine.” Maguire then tells Garfield to stop the negative self-talk, calling him “amazing.” While Rhino certainly isn’t Spider-Man cinema’s most memorable villain, and No Way Home technically got its Sinister Six via Venom (Tom Hardy), No Way Home has renewed interest in Garfield’s superhero—audiences may just see his Peter Parker/Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 or somewhere else. That being said, Morbius has already confirmed Rhino’s existence in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
