Star Trek: Discovery‘s Doug Jones is open to appearing in the next Star Trek series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, but confirms he hasn’t been contacted about reprising Captain Saru. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 premieres on Thursday, April 4, on Paramount+, while Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is currently in development. As Discovery ends, speculation about whether any of its characters could appear in Starfleet Academy is rampant.
Doug Jones spoke to TrekMovie on the red carpet at Star Trek: Discovery’s season 5 premiere at SXSW, and Jones was asked if fans can expect to see Saru return, possibly in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Read his response below:
I would say: Never say never. I’m open to it, but I’ve heard nothing so far. No one’s called me yet.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was announced in April 2023 as the next Star Trek series in development at Paramount+. Starfleet Academy‘s co-showrunners are executive producer Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau (Nancy Drew), and the series is young adult themed, centering on Starfleet Academy Cadets who are human and of other species trying to achieve their dream of becoming Starfleet Officers while discovering a threat to the United Federation of Planets. Tawny Newsome of Star Trek: Lower Decks is also part of Starfleet Academy‘s writer’s room.
If Starfleet Academy is set after Star Trek: Discovery, it is the easiest way to see Discovery characters reappear. Discovery‘s Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) became a Starfleet Academy instructor, and she may be part of the new series. Alex Kurtzman said that Starfleet Academy will start shooting in late summer 2024, and it may not premiere on Paramount+ until 2026. But if Doug Jones is contacted to reprise Saru in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, it sounds like he would be happy to answer the call.
