Nintendo Switch Adds Funimation As Its First Anime Streaming App

Funimation, the popular streaming app for some of the best anime on the market, has arrived on the Nintendo Switch as the sole anime streaming app currently on the platform. The news was announced earlier this morning once the app had become available instantly on the Nintendo eShop.

Ever since the Nintendo Switch’s launch, there have been a couple of different streaming services that have been offered on it. One of which is the streaming giant Hulu, which has made plenty of moves recently with some of its top-tier entertainment, such as The Handmaid’s Tale or Little Fires Everywhere. The other is YouTube, the popular online video platform where anyone can make whatever video they want and post it online. But other than those two, streaming services have been fairly limited.

Funimation, however, has finally made an appearance as not only another streaming platform but the only anime streaming platform on the Nintendo Switch. With this new reveal of their app, Funimation also showed that it has a new design for its app. The app has new updates which include a new look and feel, a new curation system, and an anime launch schedule. The new Funimation app debuted on the Nintendo Switch, but it will be rolled out to other platforms, such as the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, later. The app is currently available in the United States and Canada, while other regions will be arriving soon.

This might be one of the first steps that are needed to possibly bring more streaming platforms to the Nintendo Switch. Currently, on the other consoles and platforms, popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and many more are available for download and use, but none of which have come to the Switch yet. With a popular streaming site such as Funimation to arrive on the popular console, this might make way for others to come as well, but it all comes down to contracts and negotiations in the end.

With this new addition to the Nintendo Switch, there are plenty of different anime series that viewers can sit down and watch while enjoying some time on their Switch. Funimation’s app includes popular titles like Cowboy Bebop, Dragon Ball Z, Attack on Titan, and plenty more. Nintendo adding Funimation to its eShop is a great move to get people engaged more with the console, even when they’re not playing games.
