Nintendo Officially Confirms Bowsette CAN’T Be Canon

Nintendo officially confirms the New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe game’s Super Crown power-up can only be used by Toadette, shooting down the possibility of Bowsette. Last September, the gaming company announced the Nintendo Switch port of Super Mario Bros. U, titled New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, that would build upon the previously released game. In addition to the previous title, Deluxe includes the New Super Luigi U expansion as well as additional playable characters, Nabbit and Toadette. The latter character became the focus of much discussion when her power-up was also revealed: The Super Crown transforms Toadette into Peachette, a character resembling Princess Peach and possessing many of the princess’s in-game abilities.

The internet was intrigued by this idea and wondered what would happen if other characters obtained the Super Crown. Would they also transform into characters that share the characteristics of Peach? Twitter user ayyk92 took this thought process a step further, drawing a cartoon in which Bowser puts on the Super Crown and becomes Bowsette. After, Bowsette became a wildly popular online meme, with many other artists creating images of the fan-made character. There was also plenty of fan art of other Mario characters donning the Super Crown, but Bowsette was easily the most popular fan creation, with fans creating mods to add Bowsette to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. However, now it seems Nintendo has officially shot down the possibility of Bowsette.

On the official website for New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Nintendo offers tidbits of information about the various characters and power-ups. For the Super Crown entry, Nintendo writes, “When Toadette finds one of these, she can transform into the super-powered Peachette. (Sorry Luigi—only Toadette can use this item!)” Since Toadette is the only character able to use the item, it means Bowser cannot, confirming Bowsette cannot be canon.

Nintendo Officially Confirms Bowsette CAN’T Be Canon

Nintendo confirming Bowsette isn’t canon won’t necessarily stop fans from loving the character, or drawing fan art and making mods to show their love of the Super Crown-wearing Bowser. Further, it doesn’t mean Nintendo won’t figure out a way to include Bowsette in some way in the future. Considering how popular the fan-made creation is, it wouldn’t hurt Nintendo to at least pay tribute or include some kind of nod to the character.

However, as of now and given what we know is canon, it’s not possible for Bowsette to exist within the world of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. Toadette being the only character able to use the Super Crown means there aren’t any alternate, Peach-like versions of beloved Mario characters within canon. Still, official canon has never stopped fans and fan creators from imagining different versions of their beloved movie/TV show/game/comic. In that way, Bowsette can live on as long as the fans want.
