Nightwing Is Fighting Heroes To Make Sure He’s Batman’s True Successor

Warning! Spoilers for Future State: Gotham #14 by DC Comics

In DC’s Future State timeline, Nightwing is ensuring that he’s carrying on Bruce Wayne’s legacy as Batman and he’s letting other heroes sporting the role know it with his fists. In Future State: Gotham #14 by DC Comics, Dick Grayson attacks Jace Fox’s Batman, as he believes that becoming Gotham’s main Batman is the only way to save this city, as he’s willing to take out anyone who stands in his way.

In DC’s Future State timeline, Nightwing is aiming to become the main Batman in a world with three different versions of the hero active in Gotham City. Fresh after taking the dangerous drug Brane to try and find Damian Wayne, Dick Grayson has psychic visions from the future that tell him becoming the new Dark Knight in a world without Bruce Wayne is the only way he can save the city from the Magistrate. However, the drug and his mission have put Nightwing’s Batman to attack his should-be allies, as he fights Jace Fox’s Batman to prove there can only be one Caped Crusader, and it has to be him.

In Future State: Gotham #14 by Dennis Culver, Giannis Milonogiannis, and Geoffo from DC Comics, Jace Fox encounters the “Impostor Batman” running around the city. However, when Nightwing’s Batman calls on Jace to step down as Batman, telling him there can only be one hero with the mantle, he’s met with resistance as the pair fight, leading Nightwing to hit his fellow Dark Knight with a blow that knocks him to the ground. Dick Grayson sends a clear message that only he can be Batman and wants the hero’s other versions to fall in line.

Nightwing Is Fighting Heroes To Make Sure He’s Batman’s True Successor

It appears Nightwing is still impacted by taking the Brane drug, as he’s acting irrationally more than ever before. In a world where the Magistrate’s oppressive regime rules, asking his fellow Batman heroes to step down isn’t the best plan, as he could use all the help he can in taking down the villainous organization. Instead, Nightwing is picking battles with Jace, who became Batman before him, and seems to be heading on a path directly to confront Damian Wayne’s Batman and Hush’s Batman in disguise. Surely, readers will see more fireworks in a fight for the last Batman standing soon.

Nightwing wanting to continue on Bruce Wayne’s legacy as Batman is fitting given his history with the hero. Still, his way of doing it in DC’s Future State timeline likely won’t end with him reigning supreme as the only Dark Knight. Instead, Nightwing’s Batman is creating more problems than solutions, as the real villains watch the different versions of Batman fight each other when they should be getting taken down by them. Future State: Gotham #14 by DC Comics is in comic book stores now.
