Nightcrawler is Commanding His Own X-Men Team

Nightcrawler is Commanding His Own X-Men Team

Nightcrawler will be leading his own X-Men team in Marvel’s new Way of X series. The series will be coming from writer Simon Spurrier with art by Bob Quinn, and will also see Nightcrawler’s new team attempting to fight for the hearts and minds not only of mutantkind, but also that of man. However, if the preview is any indication, those goals are going to be easier said than done especially considering the team’s recent discovery in the first few pages of Way of X #1.

According to past teasers and interviews with Spurrier, Way of X is going to focus on a rising darkness that’s prevailing in the culture of the X-Men’s mutant nation of Krakoa, and it’s one that Kurt Wagner is determined to snuff out – finally getting back into the field after having been out of the game due to his seat on Krakoa’s governing body known as the Quiet Council. Apparently, this rising shadow will potentially be connected to the past of Professor Xavier, and may also have to do with a myth shared by Krakoa’s youth known as the Patchwork Man. In any case, Nightcrawler is going to be at the forefront of this incredibly important conflict, and he and his new team will be working to usher a whole new way of living to Krakoa.

In the preview for Way of X #1, Xavier is experiencing nightmares, all while Nightcrawler and his team are investigating reports of a museum propagating mutant hatred. Thus far, it looks as though Pixie, Loa, DJ, and the fellow teleporter known as Blink have joined Kurt on this particular mission. Unfortunately, it looks as though the museum’s true mission was much worse than they feared. Here’s the preview pages and synopsis for the issue from Marvel Comics:

  • THE WAY TO THE FUTURE OF X!
  • Mutantkind has built a new Eden…but there are serpents in this garden. Some mutants struggle to fit in. Some mutants turn to violence and death. And the children whisper of the Patchwork Man, singing in their hearts… Only one mutant senses the looming shadows. Snared by questions of death, law and love, only NIGHTCRAWLER can fight for the soul of Krakoa. Only he—and the curious crew he assembles (including fan-favorites Dr. Nemesis, Pixie, and Blink)—can help mutants defeat their inner-darkness and find a new way to live. This is the WAY OF X. Simon Spurrier (X-MEN: LEGACY) and Bob Quinn (CAPTAIN AMERICA) push the frontiers of Krakoa in this unmissable entry into the bold new REIGN OF X.

Thanks to the synopsis, it looks as though Dr. Nemesis will also be joining Nightcrawler’s new team, which should be a pretty interesting addition due to his evolved genius and intellect. In any case, Spurrier commented in an interview with Marvel that Way of X is not just a story about the creation of a new mutant religion, culture, and way of life for Krakoa. While it is part of it, Nightcrawler will soon realize that what Krakoa needs is going to be something entirely new that’s never been seen before, and his journey to figure out what that might be alongside his new team is definitely going to be pretty interesting when the series comes to comic book store shelves from Marvel Comics soon.
