Night Court Getting Christmas Special On NBC Ahead Of Season 2 Release

Night Court confirms a premiere date for its Christmas special on NBC, ahead of the official season 2 return. Debuting at the start of 2023, with Dan Rubin as showrunner, the reboot of the popular 1980s sitcom is led by The Big Bang Theory‘s Melissa Rauch as Abby Stone. The daughter of the late Harry Stone is joined by original Night Court character Dan Fielding (John Larroquette), with the main cast also including India de Beaufort, Lacretta, and Kapil Talwalkar. The legal comedy debuted to strong ratings, garnering a quick season 2 renewal.

Ahead of Night Court‘s season 2’s debut on NBC, TV Insider has shared a trove of photos from the show’s Christmas special, which debuts Saturday, December 23, at 8:30 ET on NBC, as well as the second installment’s premiere episode:

The photos highlight the return of Marsha Warfield as Roz, in addition to a special guest appearance by NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The six-time NBA MVP will be playing himself.

What To Expect When Night Court Returns

In the special Christmas episode, titled “A Night Court Before Christmas,” Abby gets Dan to help her with the goal of finding a little girl’s gift to Santa. Meanwhile, Dan’s gift from Gurgs (Lacretta) isn’t what she expected. Olivia (Beaufort), meanwhile, is convinced that she’s being haunted by a witness that’s actually The Ghost of Christmas Present.

The official season 2 premiere will pick up on Roz’s return. In season 1’s final minutes, Warfield reprised her role as Roz from the original show, and she has now joined the Night Court reboot cast. As the credits roll, Dan has accepted a job in Louisiana as a judge and learns that his first defendant is Roz. Dan’s happy to see her, but she seems less than thrilled. She astonishingly asks, “They made you a judge?!” and then returns to jail rather than appear before Judge Fielding. The judge himself, though, is amused by the whole encounter.

Like the Night Court premiere, the new photos hint there will be some resolution to Dan’s story as a judge. In one photo, Abby, Roz, and Dan share a scene. But it remains to be seen whether the somewhat malcontent former defense attorney will be quick to return to his old job or if he plans to remain as a judge for a good while.
