New Superman Art Casts Kurt Russell As Kal-El’s Dad In James Gunn’s DC Movie

After having played Star-Lord’s father in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kurt Russell gets imagined as Jor-El in Superman: Legacy as part of James Gunn’s DC Universe. The Man of Steel is making his return to the big screen in 2025 when David Corenswet suits up in Superman: Legacy, which will be the first proper DC Universe movie in Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters.” Superman: Legacy is reported to start production next year, assuming that the SAG-AFTRA strike is over by then, as there are still several characters left to be cast in the new addition to the Superman movie roster.

Even though it has been a while since there have been new Superman: Legacy updates, the world is still speculating what other characters will be showing up in the movie. One of them is Jor-El, better known as Superman’s Kryptonian father, who has been played by numerous actors over the last few decades in TV and film. For Gunn’s DC Universe, Yadvender Singh Rana released new artwork where he imagines Kurt Russell as Jor-El for Superman: Legacy.

If Russell were to get cast as Jor-El in Superman: Legacy, it would be a reunion between the actor and Gunn after he played Ego in the director’s MCU sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, back in 2014. At this point, it has yet to be confirmed if Jor-El will even be featured in Superman: Legacy.

Everything We Know About Superman: Legacy

Superman: Legacy will focus on a younger Clark Kent, who is already the Man of Steel in this continuity, but is still early in his journey as a superhero. While Lois Lane has been cast, more members of the Daily Planet staff will supposedly be included, as Gunn has confirmed Jimmy Olsen is showing up too. Even though it has not been confirmed or debunked yet, Lex Luthor is rumored to show up in Superman. Legacy as Nicholas Hoult, as well as Alexander and Bill Skarsgård were eyed for the iconic DC villain.

While Superman: Legacy will be primarily centered on the Man of Tomorrow, the DC Universe movie will also feature numerous superheroes in supporting roles. Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, and Anthony Carrigan have been cast as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Metamorpho, respectively. Despite having other superheroes in Superman: Legacy, Gunn has stressed that their presence is to help establish that in this DC Universe, superheroes are already established and actively helping protect the world.

If Jor-El ends up being in Superman: Legacy, it will be intriguing to see how Gunn tackles him and even the Fortress of Solitude, as they are both two major representations of Clark’s Kryptonian heritage. Depending on how they do it, Jor-El could show up as a holographic projection as he has in other live-action Superman TV shows and movies, outside of flashbacks on Krypton. Hopefully, whenever the SAG-AFTRA strike comes to an end, it won’t take long for new Superman: Legacy casting details to get announced and potentially shed light on this particular situation.
