New Super Mario Trailer May Be Hiding A Classic Donkey Kong Character

The new Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer may be hiding a classic Donkey Kong character. So far, Cranky Kong is the only character associated with D.K. appearing in the upcoming animated film. However, the two may not be alone, as Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, or even King K. Rool could receive cameos.

At the 1:55 mark in the Super Mario Bros. trailer, the racer on the far left looks identical to Kiddy Kong, the youngest member of the D.K. family in the Donkey Kong universe. Though the character hasn’t appeared in many games, he is well-remembered for his role in one key installment. Kiddy was one of the two protagonists of the 1996 video game, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble! In the game, the incredibly strong Kiddy Kong was introduced as Dixie Kong’s baby cousin. The two had to work together to rescue Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, who had been captured by the game’s villains.

How Donkey Kong’s Family Fits into Super Mario Bros.’ Story

It’s not clear how Donkey Kong and the others fit into Super Mario Bros. Movie’s story, but the end of the trailer does provide a clue. From the looks of things, Donkey Kong will start out as an enemy but will eventually wind up on Mario’s side. It’s possible that Mario is there to acquire help in the fight against Bowser. If that’s the case, Cranky Kong may send his son and an army of apes to take part in the battle against Bowser and his minions. As for Kiddy Kong, he could be one of the primates participating in the action.

If the crowd of primates watching Mario and Donkey Kong’s fight is any indication, the possibility for cameos from characters like Kiddy Kong certainly does exist. If he truly is in the new Mario movie, and his resemblance to the baby on Rainbow Road suggests he is, it makes sense that others will be around as well. Established members of the Kong family from the Donkey Kong Country games could be among the group of racers following Mario down Rainbow Road.

As for who could appear, the Donkey Kong universe is rich with characters who could appear in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, whether it be in the form of non-speaking, background roles or something more significant. Arguably the most obvious choice for an appearance in the film would be Diddy Kong, Donkey Kong’s nephew and sidekick. There’s also Dixie Kong, who may or may not be the monkey hanging off one of the karts seen in the same shot as Kiddy Kong. Another candidate for a cameo is Funky Kong, the ape known for wearing sunglasses and riding a surfboard. All three are major supporting characters in Donkey Kong’s games and could return if D.K. ever gets his own spinoff movie.
