New Super Mario Bros Movie Trailer Reveals Seth Rogen Donkey Kong Voice

A new Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer has been released, including a first look at one of the most highly-anticipated voices in the film. The animated Super Mario Bros. Movie stars Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario and features Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan Michael Key, and Seth Rogen among its star-studded cast, portraying many of the most iconic Super Mario Bros. characters. The film has been in and out of development for nearly a decade, but this upcoming iteration entered production in 2021 with Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic attached to direct a screenplay written by Matthew Fogel.

Illumination has released a new Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer, and it features Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong voice. Check out the new trailer, below:

The trailer shows Mario and Donkey Kong squaring off in the arena, with spectators shouting on. Donkey Kong makes easy work of the titular character, though, even after Cat Mario makes an appearance. Toad, Peach, and DK’s grandfather Cranky Kong are all also in attendance at the coliseum, looking on with mixed reactions as Mario gets the full Donkey Kong fighting experience. The film is slated to hit theaters on April 7.

Super Mario Bros. Movie Voice Actors Explained

New Super Mario Bros Movie Trailer Reveals Seth Rogen Donkey Kong Voice

Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong voice is the most recent voice reveal for the film. The first Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer showed off the voice work of most of the main cast, including Chris Pratt’s Mario, Charlie Day’s Luigi, Anya Taylor Joy’s Peach, Keegan Michael Key’s Toad, and Jack Black’s Bowser. With Mario being such a legendary property for much of its baked-in audience, the voice acting was a point of focus for many. The announcement that Pratt would voice Mario was met with some negative audience feedback by those who didn’t think he was a very inspired selection for the role and hoped to hear Charles Martinet’s classic version.

Instead of Martinet lending his voice to Mario, he will make various background voice cameo appearances. Sebastian Maniscalco is also set to play Spike, Mario and Luigi’s boss from the 1985 video game Wrecking Crew. Now that Donkey Kong’s voice has been revealed, the last big voice reveal seems to be that of Frank Welker’s Yoshi. Trailers so far have offered nothing but optimism for many, though some are still held up over Pratt. The other voice-acting choices were received with much more acceptance, and to their credit, they all do a quality job of matching the energy level that viewers came in expecting. Rogen’s Donkey Kong is especially fun, as the actor uses his trademark laugh in the short trailer clip.

Now that time has passed since the initial trailer release, excitement seems to be steadily building for the movie. With the footage that has been shown, audiences familiar with the infamous 1993 Super Mario Bros. live-action film should also feel more comfortable with the impressive quality that the new animated movie appears to feature. As long as the film stays true to the source material and features all the frills and thrills that players of the games expect, any lingering concerns over the Super Mario Bros. Movie voice casting should dissipate upon its upcoming theatrical release on April 7.
