New Star Wars 7 IMAX Poster Teases Lightsaber Duel

Like so many other blockbusters before it, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is meant to be seen on the biggest screen possible, and luckily there have been no shortage of screenings for the film in IMAX theaters across the globe. In fact, Star Wars 7 quickly became the premium format’s highest-grossing title and has plenty of time to add to its new record.

If the return of the beloved galaxy far, far away wasn’t enough incentive to see The Force Awakens in IMAX, AMC theaters offered attendees exclusive posters when they go to see the film in IMAX 3D. Every Sunday for four consecutive weeks (running from December 20 – January 10), the prints were handed out. As one might expect, the series has provided some gorgeous one-sheets that would look perfect on anyone’s wall. With the promotion coming to a close this weekend, audiences can now get a look at the fourth and final special IMAX poster:

AMC Theaters revealed the print today, which showcases the lightsaber battle between Finn (John Boyega) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) on Starkiller base. The poster appears to be replicating the moment from the film as closely as possible, placing the two characters in the middle of a snowy forest on the planet. One discernible difference is that Ren is sporting his now iconic helmet, whereas in the movie he was not wearing it during the fight.

This is arguably the most visually striking of the bunch, since it operates as an illustration of the good vs. evil conflict that defines the Star Wars saga. In terms of the design, Kylo’s red lightsaber pops out in stark contrast from the largely blue color palette. It draws attention to the evildoer as he prepares to attack his opponent, the brave and noble Finn, unafraid of the potential consequences his actions may have. It’s a beautiful tease of one of the movie’s most thrilling set pieces, making it a must have for collectors.

Prior to the film’s release, director J.J. Abrams talked about his approach to choreographing the lightsaber duel, discussing his intention to take it back to the “primitive” techniques on display in the classic trilogy. After some fans felt the sword fights in the prequels were too flashy and fancy for their own good, going back to basics seemed like the smart choice. Without spoiling too much, the end result was something that harkened back to the Luke vs. Vader duels, featuring a raw and physical style that left audiences on the edge of their seats. Force Awakens viewers will have no qualms commemorating this scene from the film.

AMC Theaters may have no other posters to offer consumers, but that hardly means The Force Awakens is going to take a hit at the box office any time soon. The film is setting box office records on a weekly basis and is showing no signs of slowing down. It’s also been the beneficiary of very positive word-of-mouth, and has even generated minor awards buzz during its run. That, more so than a collector’s item, will encourage more ticket sales as The Force Awakens continues its dominance.
