New ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ Featurette & ‘Dark Shadows’ TV Spot

The past month has been extremely busy for both Snow White and the Huntsman and Dark Shadows. Universal has been releasing new material for its re-imagining of the classic Grimm fairy tale left and right, while Warner Bros. has finally unveiled some footage from the new Tim Burton/Johnny Depp joint.

Today we have another behind-the-scenes clip for Snow White, along with the fourth TV spot for Dark Shadows available for viewing online. In case you missed them, be sure to also check the new TV trailers and promos that were released earlier this week for both films.

Snow White and the Huntsman

The latest Snow White featurette is introduced by Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) – whose onscreen counterpart in the film, Prince William, has been largely absent from the marketing to date – and focuses on the first day of shooting on the set built to represent Queen Ravenna’s (Charlize Theron) macabre throne room.

Check it out below:

As illustrated above (and through the film’s marketing campaign) Snow White and the Huntsman aims to truly earn the label “Gothic,” with Theron portraying the monstrous living embodiment of death – who hides her true nature behind a beautiful facade – and set pieces that are darkly stylized, but for a deeper purpose beyond “it looks cool.” That helps to set the film all the further apart from the newly-released Mirror Mirror, which is more focused on making its fantastical surface look dazzling for the sake of eye candy.

Dark Shadows

Whereas most Dark Shadows trailers released to date have focused on selling the film as a zany flick – with bits of supernatural horror atmosphere sprinkled here and there – the latest television promo comes close to devoting half its running time to making Burton’s creation look like a traditional monster movie. Before things like the 1970s setting and Helena Bonham Carter in a psychedelic wig pop up, that is.

Have a look at the new TV spot:

While responding to complaints about the comical tone of the Dark Shadows promos to date, screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) describes the film as actually having “a very straightforward, dour, gothic feeling” at times. That hasn’t been enough to appease fans of the original TV series, but nearly everyone else (us included) has approved of the mix between camp, horror, comedy, and soapy drama we’ve seen from Burton’s movie so far.

Dark Shadows opens in regular and IMAX theaters around the U.S. on May 11th, 2012.

Snow White and the Huntsman arrives in U.S. theaters on June 1st, 2012.
