New Reveal Makes SpaceGodzilla Possible For 2024’s Godzilla x Kong Movie

New Reveal Makes SpaceGodzilla Possible For 2024’s Godzilla x Kong Movie

Warning: Spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 4

In addition to supporting a massive SpaceGodzilla theory, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters set up a new way for the fan-favorite kaiju to appear in the Monsterverse. Outside of appearances in comics and other Godzilla media, the Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla villain has never been more than a one-off antagonist in the franchise. However, he remains one of the most talked-about choices for a villain role in a future Monsterverse movie, specifically Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Over the years, Godzilla has built an impressive rogues’ gallery. But after appearances from both Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla in the Monsterverse, Legendary’s options when it comes to existing Toho villains are rather limited. Some, like Ebirah and Gabara, aren’t menacing enough to be conceivable as main villains. However, Toho’s Godzilla movies do boast a few that could work as compelling opponents for Godzilla and Kong, with monsters like Destoroyah, Gigan, and Biollante leading the list. Among this group is SpaceGodzilla, a monster whose candidacy grew after unused Godzilla vs. Kong concept art surfaced two years ago. Thanks to Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 4, there’s even more evidence for a potential SpaceGodzilla appearance.

Godzilla vs. Kong’s SpaceGodzilla Theory Explained

Concept art included in Godzilla vs. Kong: One Will Fall: The Art of the Ultimate Battle Royale featured a monster design that instantly raised comparisons to SpaceGodzilla. A picture in the book showed a cave mural which depicted members of both Godzilla and Kong’s species, with the focus being on a winged, Godzilla-like figure. The idea that he was painted blue while both the Godzillas and the Kongs were painted red, combined with the directions they facing, created the impression that rather than fighting each other, the two sides were teaming against this one monster.

Admittedly, Toho’s SpaceGodzilla didn’t have wings, but given that he does have a reputation as a villain, it did make sense that he could be the Titan teased in the artwork. After all, he’s the only counterpart Godzilla has that’s not Mechagodzilla. If there is an evil, mutated version of Godzilla lurking in the Monsterverse, it makes sense that it would be SpaceGodzilla. The idea does carry some weight when considering how ambiguous Godzilla vs. Kong was about the Titan War and the history of the monsters. Based on how little the movie revealed, it does feel likely that the Monsterverse is intentionally hiding a villain in their origin stories. That increases the likelihood of the unused concept art being a hint about the Monsterverse’s next movie.

Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Reveals How SpaceGodzilla Can Be Created

If SpaceGodzilla does exist in the Monsterverse, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has already revealed how such a thing could be possible. Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla established that two ingredients are vital to SpaceGodzilla’s birth: Godzilla’s DNA and a black hole. In the movie, it was explained that SpaceGodzilla was born as a result of Godzilla’s DNA entering outer space and crossing into a black hole. The energy of the black hole mutated Godzilla’s cells, creating the extraterrestrial being known as SpaceGodzilla in the process. Something similar happening in the Monsterverse was made a possibility in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters when black holes were incorporated into the already-complicated Hollow Earth concept.

In Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 4, a Monarch scientist named Barnes contacted the organization’s main headquarters to warn them about some readings Outpost 47 in Utah picked up. According to Barnes, they detected energy spikes only found in pulsars, which, as noted in the episode, are “supermassive black holes from outer space.” Barnes noted that this pulsar-like energy is coming from Alaska. Since the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters characters notice a giant hole near the new ice Titan’s location in Alaska near the end of the episode, it appears this energy resides in the Hollow Earth. In other words, contained within the Hollow Earth is the power of a black hole, if not multiple black holes.

Barnes’ comments give the Monsterverse the tools it would need to bring SpaceGodzilla to life in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Not only that, but they solve a huge obstacle the Monsterverse would face in using SpaceGodzilla. In the movie, SpaceGodzilla’s creation made sense because there was already a working explanation for how Godzilla’s DNA would reach outer space. Biollante, a monster made from Godzilla’s cells, escaped into space in Godzilla vs. Biollante’s ending. Similarly, Mothra likely had Godzilla’s DNA attached to her claws when she flew into space in Godzilla vs. Mothra. Neither theory was confirmed, but both were floated by the humans in Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, allowing the film to bring in SpaceGodzilla without his debut feeling like it came out of nowhere.

Before Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the Monsterverse didn’t share the same setup for SpaceGodzilla, hence why there was much speculation over how it could make SpaceGodzilla work. There was no obvious event in the Monsterverse’s history that could account for Godzilla’s DNA interacting with a black hole. Now, it appears the Monsterverse doesn’t even need Godzilla’s DNA to become space-bound for the villain’s introduction to happen. As opposed to being born in space, SpaceGodzilla can be brought to life in the Hollow Earth world. By making this scenario a possibility, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has essentially erased the biggest flaw in the SpaceGodzilla theory, thus strengthening his chances of being Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’s secret villain.

While this potential origin story could make the SpaceGodzilla name problematic for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the idea itself works simply because it’s rooted in existing Monsterverse lore. Godzilla vs. Kong already revealed that the Hollow Earth houses portals that bear similarities to wormholes, which could be the basis of the surprising energy readings in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 4. It’s easier to imagine a member of Godzilla’s species getting mutated inside the Hollow Earth thousands of years ago than Godzilla’s DNA somehow finding its way into space. If that did happen, the Monsterverse could reveal that SpaceGodzilla was the real instigator of the Titan War and the threat that will force Godzilla and Kong’s team-up in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
