New Reincarnation Anime Gives an Overused Power One Twist That Makes a Big Difference

Warning: Spoilers for As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World episode 1

As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World sounds just like every other isekai series that uses the often underrated “appraisal skill”, but this new Crunchyroll series actually gives the overused trope a simple twist to tremendous effect. Although the direction of As a Reincarnated Aristocrat can easily change as early as episode 2, the overall delivery of the first episode promises something really special and can at least be celebrated for an incredible debut.

Not just isekai, but anime as a whole, sees no shortage of series where the protagonist is either born with or gains an appraisal ability that’s mistakenly perceived as a useless skill. Then, for varying reasons depending on the series, the protagonist learns that Appraisal is actually completely overpowered and dominates their world as a result.

In the case of As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, appraisal is completely unique to its world and therefore isn’t misunderstood. Meanwhile, its protagonist uses his skill, not just off the battlefield, but to prevent one from being waged on as part of a war.

Although some anime have subverted this trope to some degree, undoubtedly the most innovative instance before As a Reincarnated Aristocrat was the manga Even Given the Worthless “Appraiser” Class I’m Actually the Strongest. Essentially, appraisal is worthless in this un-adapted story, but becomes something special through a certain type of training and borrowed powers, which, ironically, is a classic action shonen trope.

Similarly, As a Reincarnated Aristocrat does away with this dynamic, but accomplishes this by incorporating another well-known trope in isekai, where the protagonist gains an incredible power that no one else possesses and therefore becomes unparalleled. It’s just rarely, if ever, been done with appraisal. However, this simple twist actually accomplishes much more within its first episode than just being subversive.

Ars Louvent gives Ritsu Muses bread in As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World

On the surface, what’s unique is that the protagonist, Ars Louvent, uses the appraisal skill to surround himself with capable people to avoid a looming war. For, even in a subversive series like Even Given the Worthless “Appraiser” Class, the appraisal ability helps the protagonist become a capable fighter. A more nuanced take is that appraisal helps Ars Louvent see the unrecognized value in others, and, in the greatest instance, to challenge, disprove and overcome a form of discrimination that had been pervasive until that moment, creating meaningful change in his second world.

Even though the series might change, As a Reincarnated Aristocrat is already proving to be much more than just another isekai series that uses the appraisal skill to no real end. It’s also not just another series that’s subverting persisting conventions in a misunderstood genre, either. As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World is using them as a strong foundation to explore incredibly profound topics that can resonate with anyone – even those who do not like isekai.
