New Nightwing Comic Story Coming From Scott Snyder?

Could a brand new Nightwing story be in the works, written by author Scott Snyder? That may seem too good to be true, with the main Nightwing comic book taking a tangent, after Dick Grayson suffered a near-fatal gunshot wound to the head, and lost his memories. Under the name “Ric” Grayson, he’s joined up with a task-force made up of other Nightwings to keep the city of Bludhaven safe. Many fans have been couting the days until the return of Nightwing… but could Scott Snyder be one of the writers bringing about such a change?

Scott Snyder is no stranger to the hero, beginning his work in the DC Universe with the Detective Comics storyline “The Black Mirror,” which interestingly enough featured Dick Grayson as Batman. Recently, Snyder has announced a return to American Vampire, and has also been promoting the new DC event Dark Nights: Death Metal, a follow-up to the popular Dark Nights Metal event from 2017. While it may seem as though the author has a lot of titles on his plate already, he may be making room for one special character in particular.

When asked on Twitter to identify his favorite version of Robin, Snyder replied that his answer, unsurprisingly, was Dick Grayson. Not only is he the sidekick Snyder “grew up with,” but the first character he wrote at DC (and therefore particularly “dear” to Snyder). What’s more, “I’m actually pitching a Nightwing idea now.” It wasn’t stated if this idea was a pitch for a new series, a part of the current Nightwing run, or a story being told as part of Dark Nights: Death Metal, or any other book. It has been almost nine years since Snyder last wrote a Dick Grayson solo story in the pages of Detective Comics, and though he has appeared in other comics Snyder has written, a proper return to the character would energize fans like few other headlines could.

New Nightwing Comic Story Coming From Scott Snyder?

While this is certainly great news for fans of the character either way, it may be some time before Snyder’s story is revealed. The current Nightwing run by Dan Jurgens and Ryan Benjamin has the character poised to be a part of the Joker War storyline. It also seems that Jurgens and Benjamin are still developing the “Ric” Grayson storyline, and it might take some time to see their original plans come to fruition. Furthermore, with new comic books not being shipped for the considerable future, every ongoing story-line at DC, Nightwing included, has been put on hold for the moment.

However, once the current storyline by Jurgens and Benjamin is over, it is entirely possible Snyder could oversee a full, partial, or adjacent relaunch of the character. As one Snyder feels passionate about, and with Snyder’s work on The Batman who Laughs and Justice League, it seems likely DC would green-light a new Nightwing direction. But whether it’s a massive story or a small return, fans will be waiting for any and all new details. We’ll do our best to bring them as they arrive.
