New Netflix Show Is Terrific To Watch While Waiting For Peaky Blinders’ Movie

Warning! Contains major spoilers for Netflix’s The Gentlemen.

While looking forward to the Peaky Blinders movie, audiences can watch another Netflix crime drama that is the perfect replacement for the Cillian Murphy series. Created by Steven Knight, Peaky Blinders unfolds in the aftermath of World War I as it walks through the day-to-day snags and exploits of the titular crime gang. Although Peaky Blinders is primarily a work of fiction, it is loosely based on the real gang of the same name that was functional between the late 1800s and the early 1900s.

With an ensemble cast including Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory, Joe Cole, Adrien Brody, and Tom Hardy, among others, Peaky Blinders never leaves a dull moment with its blend of intense action and gripping period drama. Unfortunately, despite having a strong six-season run, the show ended after season 6. Showrunner Steven Knight, however, gave viewers some hope by revealing that the series will conclude with a feature film. Although the Peaky Blinders movie’s release window remains uncertain, audiences can enjoy a new thematically similar Netflix series while they wait for it.

After an explosive season 6 filled with trauma and loss, Peaky Blinders final episode ending with a shocking reveal. Here’s what it all meant.

Netflix’s The Gentlemen Is The Perfect Replacement For Peaky Blinders

Although Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen is not a period drama like Peaky Blinders, it features a roster of morally complex outlaws who carefully navigate the treacherous waters of the criminal world. Like Peaky Blinders, The Gentlemen also has snappy dialogue characterized by clever wordplay and a tinge of satire. Since The Gentlemen includes all the hallmarks of Guy Ritchie’s works, it is relatively lighter in tone and less gritty compared to Peaky Blinders. However, the brilliance with which Guy Ritchie portrays the balance of ruthlessness and charisma in his characters is reminiscent of what Steven Knight achieves in Peaky Blinders.

Even when it comes to the protagonists of the two series, they are not too different. Theo James’ Eddie Horniman may be less calloused than Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby. However, he, too, has a military background, equipping him with the right tools and leadership skills to stand tall in the face of danger and rise in the ranks against dangerous rivals. Despite being vicious against those who try to harm his family, Eddie, like Tommy, is not completely heartless. With so many similarities between the shows, The Gentlemen could be the perfect replacement for Peaky Blinders.

How The Gentlemen Compares To Peaky Blinders (Is It Better)

Three men stand on a foggy street in Peaky Blinders

Considering how Peaky Blinders ran for six seasons without experiencing any significant drops in its positive critical ratings, it is objectively way better than The Gentlemen. The Gentlemen, however, also has its own merits. For instance, despite having an overarching storyline, The Gentlemen does a good job at keeping viewers hooked with its subplots and “crime of the episode” approach. For audiences that find Peaky Blinders‘ narrative a little too bleak, The Gentlemen gangster drama may be a better fit because it infuses its darker themes with moments of levity and tongue-in-cheek humor.
