The opening scene for The New Mutants and more new footage has been released during Comic-Con@Home. The final movie from Fox’s era of X-Men has had a difficult time getting in front of fans. Originally set to debut in 2018, New Mutants was delayed multiple times by Fox and Disney (after the Fox deal). All of these delays have now left the film with an August 2020 release date, but that theatrical launch continues to look less likely due to the state of the movie industry as a result of coronavirus.
Even though these delays haven’t been ideal, New Mutants has managed to maintain some level of interest from fans thanks in large part to increasingly good marketing materials. The first New Mutants trailer from 2017 teased the horror take of the young X-Men characters and showed off a promising cast of rising stars like Anya Taylor-Joy (Magik) and Maisie Williams (Wolfsbane). Once Disney got a hold of the film, their marketing department has shown more of the action and comic book elements fans expected. But, now the best look yet at New Mutants has arrived.
Disney and Fox held a Comic-Con@Home panel for New Mutants and debuted the opening few minutes of the film near the end of the panel. The scene is about three minutes long and shows how Josh Boone’s movie will begin, with an opening on Danielle Moonstar aka Mirage, played by Blu Hunt. The scene begins around the 24:10 mark of the video below.
The action-packed opening sequence for New Mutants shows that the movie begins with a pivotal point in Dani Moonstar’s life. She is awoken during an attack on her hometown and runs out of her house with her father just before it explodes. While she is instructed to hide in the forest, her dad goes back to try and help others but is killed by Demon Bear. Dani then is knocked unconscious after falling down a hill and wakes up chained to a hospital bed with Wolfsbane staring at her through a ceiling vent. As the lead of the movie, Hunt told Screen Rant in a separate interview that Mirage is the trigger for the film’s story.
While the opening scene sets the tone for New Mutants and introduces Dani, the sizzle reel that followed it showed new looks at the rest of the characters. Magik is shown fighting some of the Smiley Men and teaming up with her pet dragon Lockheed to take on Demon Bear. There are also a few teases of Wolfsbane’s transformation, as well as Cannonball (Charlie Heaton) and Sunspot (Henry Zaga) using their powers. All in all, the opening and sizzle reel continues to make The New Mutants look like a different and entertaining movie that could be worth the wait – whenever it is over.
