Hollywood stars have been more than willing to appear onscreen with Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and the rest of the Muppets gang for years now and next year’s The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made looks to have its fair share of celebrity cameos as well.
Jason Segel co-wrote the script for the new Muppet movie and will appear in the film, likely alongside more than a dozen other well-known and respected (human) movie and TV stars.
The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made will revolve around the efforts of a man, Gary (Segel), his girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams), and the man-like puppet Walter, as the trio attempts to get the original Muppet crew back together and stop a greedy oil baron (Chris Cooper) from destroying the team’s old TV studio.
Production Weekly tweeted yesterday that Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family), John Krasinski (The Office), and Ed Helms (The Hangover 2) may appear in the film as “Lady Gaga’s entourage” – which presumably means the pop artist herself may show up as well (insert Gaga + Muppets joke of choice here).
The Wrap confirmed those three names as possibilities to appear in the Muppet’s latest big screen outing, which may also include cameos from Jane Lynch (Glee) and Danny Trejo (Machete) as a prison guard and prisoner, respectively, Zach Galifianakis (Due Date) as a hobo (it’s the beard, right?), as well as Donald Glover (Community) and Jack Black in some sort of appropriate roles.
While every episode of the original Muppet Show primarily revolved around a single celebrity, the felt puppets’ big screen outings have included brief turns by many a thespian, including the likes of Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, John Cleese, Diana Rigg, Art Carney, Gregory Hines, Billy Connolly, Jennifer Saunders, and so many more that it boggles our minds just thinking about it.
The plot for Segel’s Muppet movie is pretty simple, but story has never exactly been the focus of Kermit and Co.’s cinematic ventures. So long as the pic has its share of the Muppet’s trademark irreverent humor (goofy puns, maniacal physical comedy, and general wacky antics), then fans should get exactly what they’re hoping for and walk away satisfied.
The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made hits theaters on December 25th, 2011.
