New mother! Clip Revealed Through Viral Easter-Egg Hunt

Darren Aronofsky has revealed a new clip from his super-secretive movie mother! but you have to follow a trail of Easter egg clues if you want to see it. The marketing for the film thus far has built up intrigue surrounding the movie while keeping specific details about the plot totally under wraps. All we know is that the movie stars Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem as a married couple who experience the most insane home invasion ever, and there’s fire and creepy stuff and apparently Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris getting it on.

The first image released for mother! was this unforgettable poster of Jennifer Lawrence in some kind of surreal hot house setting holding her own heart in her hands, having apparently torn it from her own body. Subsequent trailers gave away very little in terms of plot, but did indicate that mother! is going to be a truly bizarre and terrifying ride, with Lawrence in some kind of mortal danger from a bunch of very creepy people.

In the latest bit of super-clever viral marketing for the film, a new clip has been hidden at the end of a trail of Easter egg clues (via Yahoo! Movies). The trail began on Reddit when the movie’s official account posted a very strange new poster featuring dual images of Lawrence and Bardem, a weird distorted spiraling staircase and other appropriately hellish items. A Twitter user named Steve Zaragoza quickly discovered that by tweaking the poster’s color channels with Photoshop, a URL mysteriously appeared.

Clicking on the hidden URL www.youllneveranswerthedooragain.com takes you to a web page that features the first poster image now laid out in kaleidoscopic fashion. Moving your mouse pointer around the image causes the word “mother!” to appear and also makes a circle materialize in the center of the image. Clicking on the circle brings you to a new, previously unseen clip from the film that features Michelle Pfeiffer trying to convince Jennifer Lawrence to have a baby, and being very spooky and weird in the process.

Some of the poster images for mother! have been noticeably reminiscent of Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby, the 1968 psychological horror classic starring Mia Farrow as a pregnant woman who begins suspecting that a satanic cult wants to kidnap her child. This has led to speculation that mother! may be thematically similar to Rosemary’s Baby, and indeed the new clip of Pfeiffer talking to Lawrence about having children — and apparently unsettling Lawrence in the process — seems to reinforce the idea that mother! is headed into very Rosemary’s Baby-like territory.

We’ll have to keep our eyes on Reddit to see if Darren Aronofsky reveals any more hidden clues that lead to more treasures. The sense of mystery and intrigue only continues to build around mother!, a film that could turn out to be a huge Oscar contender when it’s all said and done.
