New ‘Monsters University’ and ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ TV Spots

University follows (not-so) monstrous James P. Sullivan (voice of John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) during their contentious college days, before they were inseparable pals. Four slightly different teaser trailers premiered last summer with Brave; now, Disney has released a more unconventional promo that riffs on stereotypical ads for actual universities.

Here's the tongue-in-cheek description for said Monsters University commercial:

Get a glimpse at the wide variety of creatures and schools that make Monsters University the premiere destination for academic excellence. Now is the perfect time to find out if MU is right for you!

That promo is currently showing with select screenings of Monsters, Inc. 3D (read our review). Indeed, the perks of re-releasing that well-liked computer-animated flick in the stereoscopic format include almost immediate profits – even though it's proven to be Disney's least-successful 3D re-release to date – and cranking up anticipation, as it's serving as (essentially) a glorified feature-length advertisement for why moviegoers should check out Monsters University next summer. Props to Disney for being as marketing-savvy as ever, if nothing else.

Oz the Great and Powerful

Here are two new Oz TV spots, released to take advantage of the New Year:

Raimi’s Oz details the misadventures of Oscar Diggs (James Franco), the two-bit magician who eventually goes on to become the legendary Wizard of Oz. The cast is rounded out by Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams as three witches caught in a power struggle that will determine the fate of that mystical kingdom; meanwhile, Zach Braff and Joey King (The Dark Knight Rises) lend their voices to CGI Oz inhabitants Finley the flying monkey and China Girl.

Images and trailers have teased a new Oz adventure that offers all the whimsical characters and demented imagery one might expect; whether the film will also have spirit and charm to boot, that remains to be seen.

Oz the Great and Powerful opens in theaters (2D, 3D and IMAX 3D) on March 8th, 2013.

Monsters University opens in 2D and 3D on June 21st, 2013.
