New Kick-Ass Universe Movie Begins Production

Matthew Vaughn’s new movie The Stuntman begins production. Best known for directing the Kick-Ass and Kingsman movies, Vaughn is a largely-acclaimed action film director. Vaughn’s most recent film was Argylle, a spy thriller starring Henry Cavill that released on February 1 of this year.

As per Variety, The Stuntman has officially begun its production. Vaughn claims he is already deep in production on The Stuntman, as the film is aiming to premiere at either the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) later this year or at Sundance in 2025. According to Vaughn, The Stuntman is part of a new trilogy set in the Kick-Ass universe.

Will Matthew Vaughn Redeem His Argylle Failure with The Stuntman?

Though Vaughn has had his fair share of actions within his career, this year’s Argylle was one clear exception. Argylle was critically panned, receiving a 33% score on Rotten Tomatoes. These abysmal reviews were met with an equally-unsatisfying box office performance, as the $200 million budget film grossed only $87 million worldwide. These statistics made Argylle one of Vaughn’s biggest flops to date, putting a black mark on his otherwise-lauded career.

The Stuntman is not technically Vaughn’s own next project, as he does not direct the film. Instead, taking the director’s seat is Damien Walters, who has been a stunt performer himself. The film tells the story of two brothers who both become stuntmen. Despite not directing the film, The Stuntman is still very Vaughn-associated, as he will produce the film, which is crewed by members of his own usual stunt team.

From Argylle to Kingsman to X-Men: First Class, Matthew Vaughn’s filmography ranges in quality. Here’s how his films stack up with each other.

With The Stuntman, Vaughn can hopefully rebuild his reputation after his one-off action flop by creating a new action franchise that rivals Kick-Ass. Vaughan and Walters have already wrapped production on the first film in The Stuntman franchise, which is titled School Fight. The fact that The Stuntman is reportedly so far along in filming should hopefully push both it and School Fight to releases sooner rather than later.
