New Isekai Anime Shocks Viewers With Most Talked-About Scene In 2024

Isekai is a prolific subgenre of anime with fantasy and RPG elements like in Re:Monster, a headliner for the stacked Spring 2024 season, but viewers are in for a shock with one scene early in the show.

On the surface, Re: Monster is a unique and clever take on reincarnation stories where the protagonist, formerly Tomokui Kanata, lives a new life as Gobrou, a reincarnated goblin. Typical RPG and fantasy adventure gimmicks ensue, allowing Gobrou to build a team of peers, grow stronger, ascend to greater heights of power, and make up for mistakes from his previous life.

Re:Monster is charming as an isekai anime adaptation that closely follows the manga and light novels before it. It smartly shows Gobrou’s path to success, allowing him to discover new RPG-like skills he can use in combat and life. However, some of Gobrou’s abilities turn an otherwise pleasant living room anime into an awkward experience, with some viewers potentially being blindsided. For Re:Monster, these talents are on full display in Episode #3, in what’s already the most talked-about scene for the anime in the 2024 Spring season.

Despite Becoming an Ogre, Gobrou Goes Goblin Mode With a Dryad

Gobrou fights the dryad in episode 3 of ReMonster

In the last seven and a half minutes of Re:Monster Episode #3, Gobrou blindsides viewers when a dryad attempts to seduce him, only for him to gain the upper hand thanks to his Libido skill. The ensuing scene is not explicit, but enough details are given that the two enjoy themselves for five hours in a moment, which blew up the Crunchyroll comment section for the episode. However silly and adolescent this harem isekai scene may appear, Re:Monster quickly reminds the audience that it’s not over.

Gobrou returns to his home and quickly discovers his female companions reacting coldly to his return. Spinel, a previously impartial alchemist, reveals that she caught onto the sight of Gobrou’s hickeys, got jealous, and wasn’t alone. Spinel makes a pass at Gobrou only to encounter six other women who also want to participate. The result is a titillating but not explicit love scene, which prompts viewers to wonder if this is what they can expect from Re:Monster.

Re:Monster Episode #3 adapts the events of the manga based on the light novel, including Chapters #15 and #16, but the chapters beyond contain similarly saucy moments and are soon to be adapted. Given the pace of the Re:Monster anime, it’s easy to expect similar content in two to three episodes at the latest, giving new meaning to the Three Episode Rule in anime. With the buildup from Episode #1, where Gobrou first learns Libido and other abilities like Triple Thrust and “Manipulating Self-Made Body Fluids,” new experiences are yet to surface.

Judging from the opening theme, Gobrou will acquire even more female followers, making the harem themes more prominent. The newly-ascended ogre has already seduced a dryad, with the manga explaining that he took that step to prevent her from seducing and killing him first. While this seems silly and part of some Bishoujo harem story, Gobrou rationalizes it as a life-affirming act, giving meaning to all the lives he has taken throughout his hunts. Re:Monster might raise some eyebrows, but it’s not the only harem isekai anime of the season.
