When it came to the friendships in New Girl, it was rather apparent that all of the loft members were great friends. Of course, as is the case in real life, some of the show’s characters exhibited some fairly flagrant favoritism. Awkward as that could be, it did result in some pretty hilarious moments.
The group also had their own demons to conquer from their worst enemies throughout the series. Some were far more significant than others, but there is no question that they all experienced conflict from foes. This series did a marvelous job of meshing these two themes together.
Jess’ Best Friend: Cece
Cece absolutely was Jess’ best friend throughout the series. This was made apparent by the fact that they had been friends since they were children. Their connection would never evaporate, which was why they were so close throughout the series.
Jess certainly was very close with the rest of her roommates, but, at the end of the day, Cece was surely at the top. They simply went through everything with one another, and one cannot minimize the significance of that.
Jess’ Worst Enemy: Caroline
For the most part, Jess seemed to avoid serious conflict with others. However, it was apparent that she did hold a pretty high amount of disdain towards Caroline. This was especially the case when Nick got back and planned to move in with her.
This rivalry also would carry over when Caroline learned that Jess started to date Nick. This was due to the fact that she suspected that Jess was the reason for their second breakup. Overall, the tension between these two was always present.
Nick’s Best Friend: Schmidt and Winston
Nick was quite lucky, as he had two amazing best friends in Schmidt and Winston. Sure, there may have been more wholesome moments between him and Schmidt throughout the series, but his connection with Winston was just as strong.
Winston and Nick grew up with one another and were essentially brothers, sharing a close connection as their fathers were both not in the picture. As for Schmidt, the connection between the two started in college and would only grow as time went on.
Nick’s Worst Enemy: Sam
Although they would be able to coexist in time, Sam and Nick had quite the rivalry. This was due to the fact that Nick kissed Jess whilst she was with Sam. Once made public, Sam would punch Nick immediately after, thus sparking conflict between them.
When Sam reemerged in the series, his hatred for Nick did not disappear, as he would hit Nick again in the loft. Nick was not a fan of Sam in other instances, too. Overall, it would be fair to classify Sam as Nick’s worst enemy for the physical turmoil he has caused him alone.
Cece’s Best Friend: Jess
There is no argument that can be made with this one; Cece’s best friend was always Jess. Sure, she would go on to marry Schmidt, but, as friends, there were certainly flaws because of their clear romantic attraction for one another.
Jess was a marvelous friend for Cece, as she was truly the individual that helped her strive to reach her full potential. Furthermore, Cece would always go to Jess when in the midst of conflict. They simply had a stellar dynamic with one another.
Cece’s Worst Enemy: Schmidt’s Mother
Schmidt’s mother was not particularly nice to Cece, as she often would insult her about her intelligence. In fact, she implied that Cece was stupid with her wedding gift, as she left a note stating that the breadmaker was easy enough for her to understand.
Given the significance of a mother-in-law, it was quite apparent that this understandably hurt her feelings. Their relationship never seemed to blossom into a healthy one at the end of the day, so one could argue that Schmidt’s mother was her worst enemy.
Schmidt’s Best Friend: Nick
Schmidt’s love for Nick was always present, as he would go as far as to throw a party for their ten-year anniversary of living together. Thus, there is no denying that Schmidt viewed Nick as his sole best friend.
Ultimately, this made a lot of sense, as Nick was his first friend who did not bully him. He definitely would develop strong friendships with the rest of the loft, but Nick’s impact on him during his college days would cement his place as Schmidt’s true best friend.
Schmidt’s Worst Enemy: Benjamin
It took Schmidt some time to recognize it, but Benjamin was an awful person in his life. Schmidt once viewed him as his friend, but the way he acted at his birthday party would end it. Benjamin was extremely rude and was only a detrimental part of Schmidt’s life.
He constantly made fun of Schmidt for being overweight, even after he lost it. The end of their friendship was made even more apparent in the final season when they were bickering over who had the better kid.
Winston’s Best Friend: Ferguson
Winston certainly had a close relationship with each member of the loft, but Ferguson was his best friend. It was a massive turn of events, as he originally planned on killing him in response to Daisy cheating on him. Instead, he took the cat as his own.
Their relationship would blossom immensely, as Winston would grow quite a high amount of love for him. They even would share food together, which, of course, is what true best friends do. Overall, Ferguson certainly was the best friend that Winston would have throughout the series.
Winston’s Worst Enemy: Coach
Winston and Coach were considered friends, but, at the same time, they often were seen fighting. Coach was a bit cold toward Winston, especially with how he disrespected his professional basketball career.
Coach more often than not was a pretty bad friend to Winston because of how mean he could be. It is hard to think of many positive interactions between them besides their wholesome moment during Coach’s goodbye. At the end of the day, they just did not seem to mesh well, even though they were in the same friend group.
