New Girl: 5 Times The Show Was Sex Positive (& 5 It Wasn’t)

New Girl: 5 Times The Show Was Sex Positive (& 5 It Wasn’t)

It is certainly apparent that New Girl is a very popular sitcom. Even after its conclusion, many fans are still watching the fun-loving show, and fondly recalling the hilarious yet profoundly relatable storylines. The friendships and relationships in the series are always fun to watch, even if the latter don’t seem to work.

Another great aspect of New Girl is its strong ability to display memorable sex-positive moments. The entire friend group, whether they are dating or not, seems to do fairly well when it comes to accepting and respecting each other’s intimate lives. However, it definitely also has some moments where it does not do a very good job in this same department. Although they all provide substance to the overall storylines of the show, it is clear that some of them could be better in their overall message.

Sex Positive: Schmidt’s Affection With Nick

New Girl: 5 Times The Show Was Sex Positive (& 5 It Wasn’t)

The friendship between Nick and Schmidt is certainly a highlight of the series. They do have some major differences, but it works out nicely. Schmidt also has a lot of love for Nick and is not afraid to show it, which is always wholesome.

He often is very open to hugging and kissing Nick. Nick often pushes Schmidt aside when he does this, but it is still rather nice to see Schmidt willing to be so open and comfortable with his best friend.

Wasn’t Sex Positive: Cece Is Openly Embarrassed Of Schmidt

Cece telling Schmidt that she's ashamed of him

When Cece and Schmidt begin their first fling, she makes it apparent that she is openly embarrassed of him. This certainly upsets Schmidt in the process, as it becomes clear to him that he is being used.

Schmidt also has real feelings for Cece very early on in the series. It becomes known that Cece feels the same way too, but she is rather cold and cruel to Schmidt in the beginning. It thankfully does change over time.

Sex Positive: Nick Helps Jess With Dating After Their Break-Up

Unlike most broken-up couples, Nick and Jess maintain a strong dynamic and are able to live together. Their connection is still healthy enough where Nick encourages her dating life and even offers advice.

It is apparent that Nick cares deeply about Jess’s happiness, and that is quite admirable. Jess definitely does the same for Nick, as she even helps convince Reagan to go for it with Nick. She has feelings for him at this time again, too.

Wasn’t Sex Positive: Schmidt And His Bosses

Schmidt and his boss talking

In the series, Schmidt is romantically linked to not one, but two of his bosses. In these dynamics, it is clear that they do not possess an interest in Schmidt as a person and the power dynamics are clearly unbalanced.

On the other hand, Schmidt spends his time boasting about it to the rest of the group. Overall, these storylines just do not mesh very well with the series and seem to be a bit toxic for all parties.

Sex Positive: Nick And Jess’ First Time

Nick and Jess' first time in New Girl.

It is clear that the connection between Nick and Jess is growing immensely at this point in the series. The pair shares two passionate kisses before their first time, and the way it happens is very nice.

As Jess is about to leave for a date, Nick goes to the elevator and walks her back to the loft. It is definitely a scene that fans love, as it finally leads to the eventual beginning of their first relationship with one another.

Wasn’t Sex Positive: Schmidt Dates Nadia Out Of Spite

When Cece calls off her first fling with Schmidt, he immediately pursues her roommate, Nadia. This is clearly a move out of spite, as he purposely chooses somebody who literally lives with Cece.

This short-lived fling also leads to Schmidt experiencing his most memorable injury in the series. Although this leads to Cece admitting that she wants something serious with Schmidt, he really does not deserve her after it.

Sex Positive: The True American Moment Between Nick And Jess

In the middle of a game of True American, Nick and Jess have to go behind the wall, as they pick the same number. From there, under the rules of the game, the two have to kiss. Nick says that he cannot do it, but Jess keeps telling him to go ahead.

Sam, who is Jess’s boyfriend at the time, shows up and encourages them to kiss once he knows what is happening. It is a funny moment, as it shows that it is just supposed to be a silly party game.

Wasn’t Sex Positive: Paul Doesn’t Tell Jess That He Has A Girlfriend

Paul is a lovable character in the series. However, he has a very bad moment, as he hooks up with Jess without telling her that he has a girlfriend. This leads to a larger conflict when he tells Jess he plans to propose to her.

Paul ends up telling her the truth, but then somehow gets her to agree to marry him after what he does. Sure, Paul ends up getting what he wants in the end, but he does not deserve it after all the pain he causes.

Sex Positive: Schmidt Accepts Susan

Schmidt toasts his mother's engagement

Schmidt’s father abandoning him leaves a massive impact on him. As a result of this, he has a hard time fully accepting his mother’s girlfriend, Susan. In fact, he solely refers to her as her mom’s best friend instead of a girlfriend.

However, he finally accepts her after his mother proposes to her. It becomes clear that Schmidt’s fear of abandonment makes it hard for him to admit that his mother finds love. Once he realizes Susan is here to stay, he is fully on board.

Wasn’t Sex Positive: The Gang Tries To Make Shivrang Take A Naked Picture

Shivrang talking to Cece

Cece openly admits at the bachelorette party that she feels weird about getting married without seeing Shvirang’s complete body. As a result of this, Jess recruits Nick and Winston to get a picture of it.

The guys keep trying to get Shivrang to do it, even though he makes it quite clear that he is uncomfortable doing so. Nick sends a picture of himself instead and pretends it is Shivrang, which ends up being shown throughout the whole party.
