New Girl: 10 Moments That Should Have Broke The Group Up (But Didn’t)

New Girl: 10 Moments That Should Have Broke The Group Up (But Didn’t)

The friend group in New Girl is immensely strong, as they continue to grow closer as each season passes. This is apparent by the fact that no matter what happens, they are all there to support one another through their struggles. In fact, over the course of the series, there are even two marriages amongst group members. The significance of their friendships does not stop there either, as, for example, Jess becomes the godmother of Winston and Aly’s first child.

However, even though they all are happy and love one another at the end of the series, there are moments where the foundation of the group is in serious jeopardy. They experience a lot of negative moments with each other, as they are prone to having big arguments. They also have points in the series where they do not treat one another kindly, which naturally leads to serious consequences. Alas, it is remarkable that they manage to stick together through it all. A lot of people in real life would have trouble if put in some of these situations.

When Nick Is Mean About Schmidt’s Cookie Gift

New Girl: 10 Moments That Should Have Broke The Group Up (But Didn’t)

Schmidt thinks of Nick when he is food shopping, so he decides to buy him a cookie. However, Nick finds the gesture to be strange and rejects the cookie. In fact, he goes on to judge Schmidt for doing this.

This causes both Schmidt and Winston to become upset with him. Things escalate so much that the pair decide that they do not even want to speak with Nick. Thankfully, Nick is able to make up with them by buying Schmidt a cookie and then crying himself.

When Nick Almost Moves In With Caroline

Nick and the group in the desert

Nick shocks the entire loft when he decides to date Caroline again. Of course, it is important to remember that Caroline is a horrible girlfriend to Nick and is the reason why he struggles a lot in season 1. Nick neglects this fact and decides that he wants to move in with her.

This leads to a massive argument between him and Jess over it, but it does not change his decision. However, after driving to the desert instead of his new place with Caroline, he realizes that he wants to stay with the gang. This is when he secretly comes back there and plays his legendary mixtape, much to the happiness of everyone else.

When Jess Puts Down Cece’s Modeling Career

Cece and Jess in a fight

When Cece invites Jess to celebrate her birthday with her modeling colleagues, the latter is not very happy about it. In all fairness, this is because they often poke fun of her appearance, since they believe she looks like the monkey from a Russian cracker ad.

Jess does reach her breaking point, which leads her to storm off. When Cece confronts her, Jess goes on to judge her modeling career, which leads to the two getting into a physical altercation. Although they do end up making up, it is always very risky and rude to belittle somebody’s career.

When Nick Kisses Jess While She’s Dating Sam

Nick and Jess kiss for the first time

The entire friendship between Nick and Jess is at risk after he kisses her. This is due to the fact that she is still with Sam. When Jess tells Sam about them kissing, it immediately leads to him dumping her, while also hitting Nick in the throat.

The conflict from this also rises when the rest of the loft finds out, as they worry that the entire dynamic of it is in danger. In fact, this is where Schmidt even informs Jess about their “no-nail oath.” Overall, things become very dicey after this, but they do manage to get past it.

When Nick And Jess Break Up

Nick and Jess breakup for the first time while arguing in his room in New Girl

When Nick and Jess have their break-up, it honestly puts a lot of things in jeopardy. For starters, the pair could have had a lot of trouble living together after the fact, as they would see each other move on. Also, the rest of the group potentially could have been put in an awkward spot if they needed to pick a side.

However, the pair show immense maturity and manage to keep everything healthy. In fact, they even manage to become closer after they split up, while also showing support when they date new people, too.

When Schmidt Cheats On Cece

Schmidt tells Cece he is cheating on her

Schmidt does the worst thing in the entire series when he dates Cece and Elizabeth at the same time. He lies to both of them saying that he dumped the other, but that of course is not the case. Naturally, the truth does eventually come out when Cece and Schmidt are on a double date with Nick and Jess.

Due to how bad Schmidt is during this portion of the series, it is understandable that Jess keeps her distance from him. Cece of course does the same and even does not go to the loft anymore temporarily.

When Coach And Cece Go On A Date

Cece is in the right for wanting to move on from Schmidt. However, it is still difficult for Schmidt when he gives Coach permission to go on a date with her. Although he shows support, he is still sad about it transpiring, as he still is in love with Cece.

There is tension from this, especially when Schmidt ends up seeing Cece and Coach kissing. However, even with all of this occurring, Schmidt and Coach remain friends. In fact, Coach is a guest at their eventual wedding.

When They Fight Over The Parking Spot

Schmidt, Jess and Nick fighting over parking spot

When the group finds out they have a designated parking spot, they all fight over it. It is understandable that they want it for themselves, as they each deal with significant obstacles when trying to find parking in their area. Jess seems to have the worst of it, though, as Outside Dave likes to sleep on her car.

There is more conflict from this, as Schmidt is livid at Nick for originally letting Jess have it because they kissed. Schmidt also hits Nick with his car when he is sitting in the spot, which is just taking things to the next level. There is a lot of fighting when this happens, but they do manage to resolve the situation.

When Coach Owes Nick $71,000

Nick and Coach fighting at Furguson's memorial

After Furguson’s tragic death, Winston throws a ceremony in his honor a year later. It is supposed to be an event to pay tribute to the best cat from the series, but there is a dark cloud hovering over it.

Coach and Nick see each other for the first time in a while, and it is clear that there is animosity between them. In fact, they even throw insults at one another throughout it. This is where Jess finds out that Coach owes Nick $71,000. Nick gives Coach this money to help his business, which fails immediately. However, the two do make up when they both admit to missing one another.

When Winston Tricks Jess And Nick Into Thinking They Are Evicted

Winston pranks Jess and Nick

In the finale, Jess and Nick prepare to move out of the loft, as they are getting evicted. The group spends the episode packing and reminiscing over all of the amazing memories they have there.

When they move everything to the moving truck, Nick closes the trunk only to see a picture of Winston that says, “Gotcha!” This is where Winston tells him that this whole thing is a giant prank and that they did not have to move. Instead of being understandably livid at him for doing this, the group just drives away and say the prank is way too big.
